My Beautiful New Stipula

Hi John,

Thanks for the info. I just checked out the pen from Swishers's site, this pen is a cartridge/converter filler.

Do you have any issues with this Etruria ? hard start, skips etc ?

The reason I am asking is because I have had bad experience with an Amber cartridge convertible having hard start problems. I sold the pen with the issues mentioned to the buyer. He may have solved the issues or he may have been living with it, I am not sure.

As such, my current Etruria collection are all piston fillers.

Thanks,

Mui

Hi Mui -

No - there is no skipping or hard starts. However, in my experience this would not be hard to fix. The problem would be with the converter. I know that because the nib and feed is the same on all Etrurias (they are totally interchangeable). That being the case and because we know the piston fill models work great, the only other variable is the converter.

Therefore, the first thing one does to verify this is simply use a cartridge. If the cartridge works fine then the converter needs to be cleaned of contaminants. Either use another converter that you know works with another pen or soak the cartridge overnight in a mixture of water with a drop of dishwashing liquid and a drop of ammonia. Suck the mixture up and out a number of times and then let it soak. Then rinse clean before use.

I have seen a number of good pens get blamed for problems that I found to be in the converter. Although they all look the same, "all converters are not created equal"!!!!

Hi John,

Great ! Thanks for the info and advice on the converter. But I have already sold my Etruria Amber with convertible piston/c.converter, so I do not have a problem now ! The buyer of my pen has probably figured this out and happily writing away with that Amber.

Anyway, with that in mind, I may get the crack ice since there is a fix with converter problems if there is an issue. It is such a beauty !

I live in Malaysia, so my pen merchant is pengallery.com . Let me shoot a mail to the shop owner now . Question: Is this crack ice a swisher exclusive edition ?

Rgds,

Mui

No - It is not a Swisher exclusive - It is available from other Stipula dealers as well. Tell them you want a Etruria de Architectura Gaudì Pedrera (that is the cracked ice model).

This is a beautiful pen, and it's on my short list of pens to buy soon.

I have one, and it's lovely. My mother says that I need to talk to her before I sell it.

I therefore need to keep it in a place where it won't escape easily. :)

Question: Is this crack ice a swisher exclusive edition ?

Rgds,

Mui

Hi, Mui. I believe Swisher did have a cracked ice special edition, but it's a different model than the Gaudí. Here's a picture of the Swisher pen:

Not my pen, unfortunately. Or my picture,. for that matter.

Best,

David

David, could you post the photo the other way around? I hurt my neck looking at it. Kidding. ;)

But your Gaudi seems to look different from the one initially posted by John. It has a piston knob at the barrel end. It is a piston filler ?

If that is a piston, then there would be another variation of the Gaudi. A bit confused on the various issue of Gaudi now..

It's just a trim ring. Mine has it as well, but it's a c/c filler.

Mine is exactly the same as Deirdre's and has the trim ring. It didn't show in my photo because I showed the pen posted and the cap is covering the ring.

BTW I also have the same Sheaffer Millenium in Cobalt Blue and had the nib ground to a medium stub by Richard Binder. Super Pen. I have yet to get a Dolcevita but they do look great.

Regards to all,

JK

  • 5 months later...

I just received my Pedrera.

Haven't inked yet. Can't wait to.

It is more stunning than I had imagined.

To be honest, I had doubts over whether I had been too hasty in ordering one.

The carvings on the silver trim pieces are simply stunning.

Now I can't wait to craft the 'Pedrera' journal that I had been talking about. Just to complement this beautiful instrument. Papers for the covering on the covers are almost there. Just too busy to find unhurried time to complete it. Well, there's added motivation now. :P

I am wondering how to take micro macro shots to show the silver artwork.

My version, has bright highly polished silver against the dull unpolished silver.

Quite different from John's piece pictured at the start of this thread, which looks highly polished all over..

Anyone know why ?

Some closeups of the silver trims.

Rather elaborate.
