Dear Aristarco,

How i wish I have 'keratol' , or 'percaline' .... do they feel like "M***skines' ?

It does indeed. MSs have the same cover material as the one I bought 20 years ago when I started bookbinding. Keratol is sold in different textures. The smooth one with tiny pecks on it, is the MS cover. The one I used for Salsaskines has a slight cloth texture and I had a piece that looked like calf skin. If I find another piece in the stationery store, I'll send you some. I'll let you know for you to send me your real address or a PO Box to send it.

Nice Dos a Dos notebook! I'm trying the exposed stitching to see if I can do those too. Greetings!

Very very cool! I want 2 of those! You need to patent this design.

cheers

Dear Wael,

Haha ... no I didn't invent the dos-a-dos .....

Its a bookbinding technique that was invented centuries ago ....

The dos-a-dos of mine here isn't 'ready' yet for sale. Its a prototype. Its got things that need to be resolved.

Namely how to cover the middle board. :hmm1:

Suggestions most welcomed.

Rgds

ps, your A5 Black Tie journal is still sitting around waiting for an inspired solution of a band closure. The covers are ready , the signatures are ready, the flyleaves and pockets are ready, but I am still wondering if I can incorporate some kind of band closure ....

Its definitely not forgotten but so sorry ...

However, the 'new' A6 Black Ties are completed . They look better with symmetrical graphics on their covers.

Thanks Aristarco,

I am eager to try new materials bcos it may influence the final design.

Likewise I can mail you materials which you can't find there. :)

Best of luck on your exposed stitching... I am confident you can do a great job...

Oh, I don't care about covering the middle part....I just want this neat journal. I recommend a different cover on each side. For me I can have the same paper at both sides too. I will take notes during internal meetings on one side and subcontractor meetings on the other.

It's perfect.

This is Journal #60 "Happy Humpbacks" - white series

Continuing the white series, this time I tried something different.

Here , it is in the exposed spine design.

The original artwork was in A5 size. Done with a LAMY Safari <B> stub and Pelikan Brilliant Brown ink.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2060%20Happy%20Humpbacks/DSCF5408.jpg

I photocopied onto the desired coversheet and split the artwork into 2 covers to allow for the spine.

Some details.

Everything in the journal is kept white, including the stitches.

The flyleaves are also white

The "anti drop-out" flap is now a regular feature in my journals.

Hey, TMLee, I just wanted to know what an inspiration you've been. Thank you.

I finally enrolled in a bookbinding workshop at our neighborhood museum and came up with this modest journal:

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/1053/bookbinding03.jpg

There are things I need to work on, but this is a start. Finished size is 8.5" x 5.5". The cover is cranberry colored handmade paper, and the spine cover is yellow bookbinder's paper. It's US Letter size 80gsm paper folded into 4 folios x 12 signatures, or roughly 192pp. We were taught lock stitch. Next I want to learn Coptic :)

The Lopez Museum was offering a list of summer activities for the community. Glad I managed to get a slot at this bookbinding workshop. Next they are offering Book Repair, which I'm also interested in. (The museum has a library and trains people in archival conservation.)

Corner Bands

I am still trying to find an appropriate band closure for the bigger A5 sized journals.

The same band system as used in the A6 sizes don't work as elegantly as for the larger sized A5 journals.

And so I experimented on the A6.

I glued a short strip of brown band at the corners. It can't be too long too becos it will affect the pocket.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5453.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5454.jpg

When deployed, it actually looks good. Its tight and taut.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5455.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5456.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5456.jpg

But when not deployed, its loose and saggy. The reason is simple. The band when glued is already a short length. This means that it has less elastic to stretch. So when gluing, it can't be taut and slightly tensioned otherwise when deployed, it bcomes too tight.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5458.jpg

Not successful this first try. :crybaby: Almost there but not.

Corner Bands Part 2

After examining the 1st attempt, I decided to try a little modification and try on the actual A5 size.

Here its glued onto the corners, but farther away bcos if too near the corners, the band slips off easily off the corner edge.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5439.jpg

With the pocket and flyleaf glued

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5442.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5443.jpg

The corner bands in position on the rear outside cover.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5447.jpg

When deployed, it again actually looks pretty good. Its at a comfortable distance away from the corner. It won't slip off. Its taut and keeps the journal closed. You can also use this to hold down pages if ever thats needed.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5449.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5450.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5448.jpg

When not deployed, its a little slack. But not terribly loose.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/corner%20bands/DSCF5451.jpg

Any ideas to improve ?

This is Journal #59 "Red Dragonflies".

One of my favourites !

Somehow the colour scheme blends and matches beautifully.
