Kaweco Sport (original)

Okay; my first attempt at a review (I've got plenty to go!). I've traced this one to the early fifties, but if anyone has more info, please post.

First Impressions (8)

I bought it from the Ludwig Beck department store in Munich in the mid-1990s. They had apparently found a box of NOS pens of which this was the last one. These are perfect for dropping into your pocket or purse, yet substantial enough to feel like a proper fountain pen once the cap is posted. Feels nice in the hand when capped.

Appearance (6)

I like the look of this pen, but the combination of hard rubber cap and injection moulded barrel make it look as though the pen is a cut-and-shut job. It looks very vintage when open but quite modern when the cap is back on.

Design/Size/Weight (6)

Design of round barrel and octagonal cap make it look a little strange; later models rectified this.

Nib (7)

I’m not really a fan of fine nibs so not best placed to judge, but it writes smoothly as long as you don’t try to write too fast - too quick a pace causes the tines to separate a little and a ‘double line’ to form on the page. The nib tends to make me write smaller than usual as well.

Filling System (7)

The smoothest piston filler I have, tempered by the fact that you have to remove a blind cap to get at it (easily lost if you aren’t careful). Doesn’t hold a massive amount of ink, but there is a large sized ink window to check.

Cost and Value (9)

I bought it for around 90DM (UK£30). Considering it was NOS when I bought it it was very good value.

Conclusion (7)

A nice little pen for when you don’t want to carry something too large or expensive, but not really for expansive writing

Man o' man, I like those vintage pens! I have a modern Kaweco Sport (med. steel nib) that I tote around in my jeans pocket on weekends. Great lil' pen that starts as soon as the nib touches the paper! I've watched pens like yours on an auction 'site over-and-over .... even bid occasionally and miss.

The piston, I understand it is made of cork?

Thanks for the review.
