I really like this thread, too.

It's been almost 4-1/2 years since I posted my writing desk. The pics are still there! It's kind of disappointing to see so many earlier posted pics disappeared either from multiple server moves or picture moves, but there are still so many beautiful and unique desk spaces to see in later posts, and I think we need to keep it going. It's all fun, and none of it boring. :)

So, thought I'd update with a few old and new pictures of my desks. Yeah, plural. (I think a couple others have me well beat for desk collecting, though.)

I'll start really blah, with my former space at work. This pic is a couple of years old, but I was in this space the most time out of many years, and I moved in and out of it twice. I called it the Corner Pit. The entrance was the corner (created by using shorter walls, which also cut the amount of available storage space), and when people walked around the corner of my desk, they usually ran right into the next cubicle wall, they never expected the cut. There were a few ouches because of it, because the pathway was so narrow on the outside on both sides. Wheelchair accessible? I.don't.think.so. One of my vanishing point pens is by my calculator. All other non fp pens were used for loaners or for drawing underscores on charts and reports, or the Sharpies for shipping. Except for non fp pens, I bought just about all my own office supplies, including the carts to keep my daily workload in. I eventually bought my own chair after the supplied one broke after several years and our budget wouldn't allow new chairs. They offered me a new chair about 1 week before my last day. Right... :roller1:

Not too much more exciting, is my home computer space (and I get myself nice, comfortable chairs):

This is the desk I posted over 4 years ago, my antique Captain's/Davenport:

And, my "new" vintage secretary! It was just delivered today by the used/thrift dealer I bought it from for only $150. The finish is in sad shape in places (at one time was shiny black piano lacquer and still has that scent), but the desk itself is solid. The top finial block is cracked but it isn't noticeable. Really, I think the $150 was well spent. It holds my current inks on the shelves, and the three drawers are empty at the moment. They will soon hold my ink and pen cleaning supplies, as well as more ink when I bring the rest back from storage. It holds my seals well, and I filled the little drawer inside on the right with Atelier Gargoyle wax. A couple wax jacks added for good measure and fun... yeah, I'm loving it!

My home ink storage was:

That's great, Fountainpagan! I love all the vintage and antique mixed in there. Great old typewriter, even an old school type pencil sharpener, the radio (I think that's a radio by the window?), is that a judge's mallet, and a desk seal next to it (or a trick of light)? The rocker blotter, and what is that black plate on the desk? Could be a really big and old paperweight I suppose. Only the computer and your phones and the surge protector look modern. Is that a stationery box on top of the cabinet or something else? The cabinet almost looks like an old ice box, but I don't think those came with locking drawers. There's a lot of history in that space. :)

In my living room.

Nice Remington portable there - good typers, those. Is that desk one of the type designed to store a typewriter? If so, it's a pattern I haven't seen before.

Sincerely, beak.

Welcome aboard! You have certainly used every bit of space and I too really like how you combine the modern and vintage.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thank you all for your compliments

The pencil sharpener is a Boston, found in Afganistan. The typewriter is a Remington reporter #4 from 1930 that I received when I was 11. Yes it is a radio (but a modern replica).

is that a judge's mallet, and a desk seal next to it (or a trick of light)? Trick of light.

The rocker blotter, and what is that black plate on the desk? It's my leather mouse mat

Is that a stationery box on top of the cabinet or something else? You saw it in the Where do you stock your inks thread. Its the littler box/cabinet I have just finished.

The cabinet almost looks like an old ice box, but I don't think those came with locking drawers. There's a lot of history in that space. :)

:) Thank you.

It is an ancient cabinet that was used by the chiefs of the train stations of the SNCF (French railroad company) until the 50'. I

I allways keep it open because I lack space. But here is how it works:

Inside the is a shelf

Then a inside desk you could use it to work on it (that's what I do) or use it as a additional shelf . This way, you could use the top of the desk as an attending stand to serve the people.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/838/3ya8.jpg

Or use th full desk closed.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/843/29mf.jpg

You could, before closing it completely, slide a board an closing the total desk with a key (it looked like a box, after). I don't have the board or the key...

The are drawers (4) on the right.

I have to find time to restaure it correctelly.

This desk in not *my* desk, though it is in my office at home - this is my wife's desk.

We resisted sharing an office for years: it seemed too clingy; besides which, my wife had her own much bigger office in an outbuilding. But this past weekend, we set up this tank desk where my beloved console stereo used to sit.

It ends up that it's quite nice, really. We having been spending more time at our desks this past week.

And if you look at the larger image, you'll see my wife's fountain pens hidden in a parfait glass amidst the foliage. Gold star to anyone who can identify them through the leaves. :)

My own desk is on the opposite side of the room and seems far less cosy looking, now that I have my wife's to compare it to ...

I agree! I don't know, but in my mind your wife could be a writer or a teacher, while you would be more likely a journalist or a photographer.

(i would have said graphic designer or engineer but your desk is not nerdy enough :P)

I think this would make a nice addition to this thread. Whenever somebody posts a picture, please let us know some your profession or some of your passionate hobbies..

That is really pretty! Classy!

Thank you. Others in my office insist it is too clutttery.

My wife is, as you rightly guess, a teacher. Bonus points if you can guess what subject she teaches. :)

As for me, well, I will admit that my work-space aesthetic is completely at odds with my profession: I'm a programmer and IT administrator. I just don't have the stomach for giant whirring boxes and multiple giant monitors :)

I like you suggestion re. professions and hobbies - though I also like chance to guess first!

Cool!!! I would say probably English, but maybe Arts too.

It crossed that you could be sth like a programmer or an analyst with minimalistic tendencies (:P), but then I saw your Mac and thought that had you been that, you would probably have prefered a unix based system. Oh well, I guess OS wars will never end... :)

"English" is correct. For some, the giant "Riverside Shakespeare" on the desk would make it obvious .... but only if you knew people who studied English in university, for whom the Riverside Shakespeare is a sort of trophy. Rather the way a CRC Handbook was for those of us in chemistry/biochemistry.

As for the OS - on the one hand, Mac OS *is* a unix-based system now, and on the other, I do prefer linux systems for servers and workstation clusters (just not for laptops).

Now I'm going to go back to some of the older photos and start making guesses.

I don't know a whole lot about foreign educational systems (I live in Greece). I just figured -judging from the desk set up- that your wife is probably delicate, educated, interested in arts and litterature, perhaps witty etc..

You 're right about MacOS being unix based, but come on, you know when we say "unix-based" we're talking linux!!!!! :P

(yes, i am kind of a fangirl..)

All these aside, I must admit I am pretty jealous of some of the study areas I have seen in this thread (both of yours included).

Unfortunately I have neither the space nor the money to create something really cool, but I am "stealing" ideas from everyone here and I am trying to find an economical way to pretty up my room.
