J. Herbin was established in 1670.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

At the moment company belongs to Exaclair Inc, that has rights to brands like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Brause or G. Lalo.

J. Herbin offers 30 standard colors:

I receive a bottle of Bouton D'or from a generous FPN'er... The color is great for mixing. Not so much as a writing ink. ;)

Great Review as always.. :D

That must be one wet, broad pen. In my written sample, the line cannot be read without real effort, even when dipped.

Great reviews!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Quick look on my smartphone and it rrminds me a bit of Ambre de Birmanie

As you know Vis d'or is gold.... how does this compare to KWZI old gold

Das leben ist wie ein Perpetuum Mobile mit ein Mangel..... Immer im Bewegung jedoch nicht unendlich. (life is like a troubled Perpetuum Mobile ever moving but not for ever)

Tricked throughout the centuries...

For centuries people had been tricked by kings & "religion-alism"

In the 20th century people got tricked by communism

Today people get tricked by (neo)capitalism :)

If I have a chance (I'm really busy at the moment), I'll write a sample and post in this thread. I checked again last night and I literally cannot read the line I write with my 10ml bottle of this ink. It's ridiculous. Anyone else have a much different result from what is shown above?

I agree with you. I believe the swab is more representative of the ink I have than the text. The swab is yellow/yellow while the text is orange/yellow..

I LOVE the written Vis' written sample here. I wish mine looked like this. Thankfully I have bottles of Ambre de Birmanie, which does look like that.

@jason - I received an old cartridge with this ink. Maybe some water evaporated and it made it more saturated? If I ever put my hands on other sample of this ink I'll compare it with the sample above. It would be great if you could post some scan / photo.

  • 4 months later...

I heartily agree with Cyber6, KWZI Old Gold has something extra about it. I have Noodler's Golden Brown (which I love) and at first I thought it was the same thing in general BUT now I am of the opinion there is a lot to love about Old Gold. I have suspected sheen but have not gone about scientifically hunting it down. Probably won't have the time to do that, alas.

As for Bouton d'Or, it is lovely but would be annoyingly hard to read, and I can't imagine using it on ivory paper. That would be more like semi-invisible ink. Great for writing letters to the IRS, not so much for anyone else.
