DIY HANDSTITCHED LEATHER JACKET - MID-SIZED

Been busy for months now with no hobby time. :gaah:

Last nite was a brief respite ....

and i am falling far behind on my (only a few) journal orders... :(

This leather jacket is meant to carry the set of three midsize journals featured earlier ...

This attempt is a trial run, to see and learn from mistakes, and to learn where are the places that can be improved.

I dont have a leather sewing machine and so its all handstiched.

My first wrap earlier , gave me painful fingertips.

So now I know and will employ other ways , and more slower ....

marking out the size for the journal

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2327.jpg

cutting with a rotary cutter.

I prefer this tool for cutting leather (and other materials) which doesn't cause damage from the shearing forces of an ordinary blade.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2329.jpg

cut out the sleeve that will receive the book cover...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2330.jpg

Positioning it into place ...

i read somewhere that they use rubber glue to hold it in place.

I didnt take that decision, fearing the glue will cause resistance when stitching.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2331.jpg

Marking the stitch positions with a pounce wheel which I modified to make the holes further apart...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2333.jpg

The stitching starts ..

I think its called a saddle -stitch ?

(needles at both ends of one thread)

These needles are supposedly leather needles , half of its length is triangular in shape , ending in a very sharp tip (ouch).

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2336.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2337.jpg

I dont know how to measure leather to get the size right,

so I made everything to fit snugly.

before I made the last closing line of stitches

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2338.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2344.jpg

The first corner

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2346.jpg

now this last corner

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2350.jpg

Improved upon how to round corners.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2348.jpg

My journals have rounded corners.

The radius of the curved corners on that midsize journals are larger.

so i felt that having right-angled corners will result in corners that will become floppy due to that gap of space there.

Fitting the cover into the corners

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2351.jpg

The outside view.

This is where I am a little disappointed.

The stitches dont look straight enough for me.

They look straighter on the inside becos of the perforated markings I made there.

Better pics under daylight ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2357.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2358.jpg

The stitches on the inside are straighter

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2359.jpg

I will trim the leather edges after everything is completed.

And probably apply some edge dressing.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2360.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2361.jpg

Will trim corners into 45deg chamfers.

Not sure whether it will look odd or not.

Maybe it should be rounded too , but how do I cut it?

I am thinking maybe I shld be marking the perforations on the outside of the jacket . Maybe that'll make the stitches straighter in line.

I chose blue stitches (instead of usual off-white stitches) cos I thought why not add some colour.

I will also try incorporating red stitches later , to give a more complete design outlook.

The leather is soft and is camel in colour.

I am not sure whether its good enough to fulfil the order.

I have no leathermaking skills.

If it doesnt, I'll probably use it myself.

Deciding the extent of the other sleeve...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2399.jpg

This time, I glued the other sleeve into position...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2400.jpg

I started stitching for a while , then realized that it took too long and too slow.

Fresh from looking at how others stitch leather, I quickly made a makeshift stitching pony...

with two pieces of board...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2368.jpg

This time I was able to adjust and made larger curved corners.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/DIY%20Leather%20Jacket%20MidSize/DSCF2381.jpg

Now I trimmed the edges ...

DISASTER :wallbash:

One edge was too near ...

This is Journal 177 "Peacock Feathers" the A5 (large) version completed on order some time back.

My 20th TR Paper journal

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2295.jpg

Initially when I started , I didn't realize the patterns were so closely spaced that it can result in a noticeable mismatch (on the completed covers)

I noticed the motifs were not exactly symmetrical.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2124.jpg

So I proceeded to craft the other covers to match them perfectly, like so ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2127.jpg

and

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2128.jpg

Here are the two sets now matched ...

perfectly symmetrical.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2129.jpg

Front

I settled on a magenta accent

and stitches ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20177%20Peacock%20Feathers/DSCF2276.jpg

Four pairs of sewing stations instead of the usual 3 pairs due to the TR paper.

It goes so nicely with your "Scriptorum" Pen (Renee does really nice work!) are you keeping this one for yourself?

Yes indeed , Renee does a good job

and no , this journal was sold on order.

Funny thing is , all my best creations are either sold or gifted away. :D

I suppose I derive greater pleasure from seeing others delighted :D

Its a nice journal.

The colours and motif all come together quite nicely.

The extra bonus is the TR paper that it carries ...

I certainly hope it gets used ... :)

Amazing work TMLee! I've been through all 44 pages of this thread twice--once when I first ran into it and went through it to see all of the pictures then again to read the actual posts, unfortunately I didnt pay enough attention so I'm going to go back through it again and checkout some more of your detailing. Finding this post really got me excited about book binding once again, I was lucky enough to have taken a book arts class in college so I especially appreciate the experimentation and craftsmanship in your work. :D

I just ordered several supplies to get back into making my own books  Cant wait to see what you make next!

Thank you for the warm welcome :vbg: And you've obviously done amazing work without a class, what i've seen in this thread is far beyond what many (if not most) students could make even after the class
