Lee, I used well damped Arches 88, 140# weight and Arches Cover, 92# weight, papers for my embossing.

Thanks Eli,

I didn't know what Arches 88 were ...

What do they look like and damped as in dampened wet ?

I was thinking of covering the embossed part whilst I use the burnisher, that way preventing the bookcloth surface from getting marred.

That's a very good idea and should work well for you. There is a similar problem with ironing synthetic fabrics, where the motion and heat of the iron work together to shine the synthetic material in unwanted ways, and the cure is the same: a pressing cloth, usually dampened a bit. The trick is to have something between that doesn't move but stays exactly where you put it until you pick it up and move it. That way only the pressure transfers to the fabric and any marring happens to the pressing cloth (or in your case, embossing cloth).

So for your purposes, any cheap fabric with a bit of thickness -- even a kitchen towel or a washcloth -- should work as long as it doesn't move but stays in exactly the same place on the cloth while you burnish (even if you're using an elbow :)). It doesn't have to be as thick as terrycloth or a Turkish towel (though that wouldn't be bad) but it has to have some weight to it: a woven fabric you'd make a summer shirt from, for example, might not work as well, and a paper towel might just shred.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

(Edited for clarity)

Thanks Daisy ...

Hmmmm ... :hmm1:

I need to be able to see very clearly as I burnish.

So it has to be something transparent.

It can't be plastic bcos plastic won't allow me to burnish the sharp edges.

I am thinking of tracing vellum like what I use in my pocket hinges. But it has to be thinner to negotiate the edges and ridges.

( I am already thinking of very fine designs. So far all my embossed letters remain large for practical reasons. Anything smaller would be difficult to rub down bcos I am working against the glue-drying time which is quite fast.

The molding and shaping is best whilst the glue is wet.

But it cannot be overly wet because the bookcloth will start to distort from burnishing even tho there is a paper backing.)

Will explore more ....

In continuing the newfound technique of debossing, I decided to try embossing instead ...

Using a good quality magazine cover paper, i ripped it out and photocopied an oversized alphabet "a" onto it.

Then cut it out carefully ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3440.jpg

Then came the challenge of where to place the alphabet on an A6 cover ...

Tried a few variations ..

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3442.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3443.jpg

I felt the "a" looked a bit bare and forlorn, so I decided to add the 2 dots overhead .... :D

What do u call this ?

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3447.jpg

I then decided to move on and proceeded to glue it on the cover

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3450.jpg

Then I glued on the bookcloth

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3451.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3452.jpg

I still haven't mastered the technique of how to press down the edges of the alphabet in such a way that doesn't mar the bookcloth , even if its ever so slight.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118B%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20a%20Emboss/DSCF3453.jpg

Trying out again an emboss with bookcloth ...

somehow , just can't get it right without marring the bookcloth... :(

monogrammed journals are highly personalised.

some pple don't like them at all ...

Hmmmm ... :hmm1:

I need to be able to see very clearly as I burnish.

So it has to be something transparent.

Interesting -- I thought you'd be doing it by feel, lifting the cloth every now and then to see what needs doing next. But I've never tried it, so I'm no authority -- just a sewer, not a bookbinder. :)

It can't be plastic bcos plastic won't allow me to burnish the sharp edges.

I am thinking of tracing vellum like what I use in my pocket hinges. But it has to be thinner to negotiate the edges and ridges.

Do you have any cheesecloth around? Even a single layer is better than nothing, and you can see through it to a certain extent. I suggest this because a fabric will tend to stay put on another fabric, which is what you want in order to avoid damaging the bookcloth. Also, cheesecloth will definitely allow you to get into all the little crevices.

And the best thing about cheesecloth? It's *very* cheap. :)

Good luck!!!

Thanks Daisy,

Yes I have cheesecloth. But its pretty fragile. At least the one I have.

Yes I understand your logic, cloth and cloth won't slip.

But I think the cheesecloth won't stand the rigors of burnishing.

Maybe soft plastic will work, like those in ziploc bags that sort.

My earlier perception about plastic was incorrect, I was thinking more about acetate then. :headsmack:

Will experiment. :D

Sounds good! If it moves on you while you're burnishing, and you end up giving your bookcloth an unwanted bit of shine, lightly roughing up the shiny spots with a slightly damp, clean rag after everything has dried should fix that for you.

Good luck!!! :)

The purpose of doing this is to achieve a flush effect - the bookcloth accent and the paper cover are level. There is no resultant bulge from the bookcloth overlapping the paper cover as is commonly seen in bookcovers bound this way.

Here is the comparison on the completed pair ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20132%20Postage%20Red/DSCF4429.jpg

The green one is flushed level.

The red one has a bulge.

I am quite pleased with the results bcos the flushed effect helps to reduce if not eliminate the wear and tear from abrasion on the bookcloth as the journal gets shelved and reshelved repeatedly. biggrin.gif

Hmmm ... The pics are murky .. I think there's not enough light.

and ...

There's something different about the posting commands, can't seem to embed direct links correctly ...

anyone else experience the same ?

Am I seeing things or is there a change in the pagination of this threadpost ?

It's not just you -- there's something strange going on. Reading it now, it seems as though we had our chat about cheesecloth *after* the "kk" journal and not before... but I could have sworn the "kk" journal came after.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong. It's happened once or twice before. :roflmho:

Not really a scribe, more of a Pharisee...

Trying out a new variation of a journal with a logo.

The alphabets were pasted onto a page from used desktop calendar , then cut out

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118C%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20MN%20Emboss%20n%20Deboss/DSCF4461.jpg

It then struck me that I could use the cutouts ....

So I decided to use the cutouts as well

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118C%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20MN%20Emboss%20n%20Deboss/DSCF4466.jpg

The final journal will have a cover thats embossed and the other debossed

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118C%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20MN%20Emboss%20n%20Deboss/DSCF4467.jpg

The covers covered with bookcloth

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118C%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20MN%20Emboss%20n%20Deboss/DSCF4477.jpg

Closeup

The deboss - on the front cover

and the reverse image of the front cover ,

done as an emboss on the rear cover ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20118%20GEMATEX%20-%20Ochre/Journal%20118C%20GEMATEX%20Ochre%20-%20MN%20Emboss%20n%20Deboss/DSCF4479.jpg

This journal is one of a pair bearing monograms ...

For some time I was hesitant in using the Helvetica typeface bcos I wasn't convinced 'mn' looked nice in it.

Then I discovered this typeface designed by Charles Rennie MacKintosh .... while I was actually trying to source for examples of lead glass window patterns.

I wanted such an effect embossed on a journal cover.

I thought it was a great idea.

I was brought to my senses when I realized I was too ambitious. embarrassed_smile.gif

I learnt from this episode that narrow cutouts or channels don't emboss nor deboss that well.

Then again, I have yet to learn how to do either properly.embarrassed_smile.gif
