Currently working on Journal #115 "Postage" ... another quartet of Journals in the same design as #112 "Atlantique".

This is the base material , a 12inch by 12inch square paper printed with some graphics.

Some prints are very well put together in terms of aesthetics.

Some appear unco-ordinated and 'hastily' put together.

The covers are done ... like so ...

One large A5 size;

One A6

One A6 Landscape

One A7

I have selected a nice dark brown bookcloth for the spine edge like so ...

This is Journal #116 "Le Corbu ... " crafted on commission.

The commission called for a sketchbook in a landscape format bearing 'traces' of the iconic master architect Le Corbusier ...

It involved sketching his buildings and other designs and transferring them onto suitable paper for the covers, a technique employed in my white series of journals.

The finished product

Front , pictured with a Stipula Saturno Blue Black Ebonite crescent filler in <B> nib. (a fantastic nib I discovered- it had strokewidth variation - much to my surprise)

The Front cover bears a hand sketch of what one would see in one of the approaches to Ronchamp ...

The bldg comes into view magnificently ...

Spine.

I chose white stitches as is standard on my white series of journals.

I decided to sketch something a little less commonly featured .. The pews ...

The inktestpage.

I chose 135gsm paper that was not white. It best fits the purpose of sketching - whether charcoal or FP or pencil with washes , etc

Some high quality bookcloths from Madrid Spain , from a really fascinating bookbindery that was established way back in 1890 :yikes:

The bindery is called AMILLO, S.C.

I have in my possession only some 8 shades of their high quality bookcloths.

This series of bookcloth is called GEMATEX.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2652.jpg

As stated on its webpage, the fabric is indeed high quality as I have examined. Its 210gsm and with a backing that is pretty thicker than those that I have seen so far on bookcloths.

The paper backing is 60gsm as stated on the webpage.

The end result is that the bookcloth is somewhat thicker and possibly tougher.

This is what the texture looks like upclose...

(sorry for the moire effect - how does one overcome this in digital photography?)

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2653.jpg

I decided to quickly try it out to see how the material suits my primitive techniques ...

And I am pretty impressed with its workability :clap1:

I tried the 2 shades that attracted me most - a sort of light Olive Drab - not 'jarring' to the eyes. The chroma is more subdued.

The other one is a nice dull yellow or dull orange or dull yellow orange - the kind that is understatedly elegant ... (i need help in describing...)

They look pretty nice , not unlike the Hemmingway pair in 100% cotton recently featured ...

(there are significant differences to the touch, though )

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2629.jpg

The covers all wrapped

The green one

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2641.jpg

and the yellow one

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2639.jpg

Of greatest concern to me was how it folded over the rounded corners.

The material was thickish but it yielded beautifully upon the usual overnight clamping.

This is the closeup of the end result after overnight clamping.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2658.jpg

Its not perfect, I know, I settled on this technique after much experimenting. (I wish someone taught me in the first place and save me all the sweat :crybaby: )

But this technique yields the most presentable rounded corners.

It is smooth and rounded to the touch, unlike my other journals that are covered in paper.

However, I haven't been able to transfer this technique to paper coverings though.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/GEMATEX%20bookcloth/DSCF2660.jpg

If any of these bookcloth covers interest you for a journal cover, just PM me or email me.

Thanks for looking ... :)
