Lamy Experiment #3 - "hawk" Nib - Sponsored By And Dedicated To Floreat

Ok so when I originally saw this thread I already had a finished architect grind on stock that I was going to PIF anyway so I thought it would be worth a try to change the writing angle by offering a "stub" that is 90° offset to the normal stub.

It worked out great obviously:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! The pen arrived and I've just tried it and it is wonderful. It is amazing to see my writing come out with the thin strokes and broad strokes in the right places for western calligraphy! I am going to have a lot of fun with this - I've always wanted to be able to do calligraphy, but it took me a long time to work out what was wrong with my writing and why I could never get it looking like it is supposed to.

So I offered to try and grind another one, with more than the .6mm architect grind that the original Pen offered. So this is experiment #3 (here are the others: #2 #1)

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

And now to figure a way to send this to the UK without damaging it... :D

WOW this looks amazing! :D I've not seen a nib that looks like this before, and I'm very excited to try one.

For those who didn't see my thread in Penmanship, up until now I have had huge problems doing (Western-style) calligraphy because I have a very odd way of holding my pen. I have a hypermobility disorder that means my fingers bend back on themselves, so I developed my pen grip to compensate for that. Unfortunately it means that I hold my nib rotated to point at 9 o'clock and if I try to write with a standard calligraphy pen, all the fine strokes come out broad and all the broad ones come out fine.

This can be overcome by turning the paper 90 degrees and writing vertically upwards (which is mind-bending), or by using an architect's ground nib instead (which is sometimes referred to as an Arabic/Hebrew calligraphy nib). Bardiir sent me a pen as he mentioned above, and the results are wonderful :D

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

Great you like it :)

I'm not quite sure if there is anything like this already that you could have seen even if you would have wanted to. I've seen some very strange bent nibs from sailor for extraordinarily high prices but this is probably very unique still. I'll probably send this out insured too as this would pose quite some loss of working time if it would vanish.

And another update: Since this went pretty smooth and the result is just amazing I'm seriously considering to push this onto kickstarter, buy some proper tools that won't damage the nib so seriously when bending/grinding it and start producing these. I've raised a ticket with kickstarter because they have a rule that prohibits resale of items, and I'm basically just resaling Lamys on that with a modification so I'm unsure if Kickstarter will allow it, but it would probably be great :)
