Substitute For Van Gogh Starry Night

kronos77

Recommended Posts

I was stunned to hear that VGSN is not available. I need a substitute. It can be primary blue or indigo/purplish, but not navy. It must be dark, dark blue.

I have tried several dark blues. I think PR Midnight Blues is great, but too bright. I thought Sailor Shigure might be a nice purplish blue but it is bluish purple and too bright. I hate it.

Help please!

Mont Blanc Midnight blue seems like a good candidate (only got the pre-2013 formula in the database but the new formulation shouldn't be too far from that too):

De Atramentis Black has a hint of blue:

Diamine Eclipse is a very dark purple:

Pelikan Tanzanite is a dark purple too, but might be too light:

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

pakmanpony, apologies but my Twilight looks nothing like it. Sorry.

The closest I have or perhaps can recommend is Organics Manganate

Best of luck. It's a gorgeous gorgeous colour and one I'd liked to have had more than 2ml of.

Two other groups of ideas:

Blacks with a blue tint...

This is basically a black with a hint of blue, so maybe a bit too black:

Same goes for Susemai Black Amber but you will need to contact amberleadavis if you want some of it:

http://www.fp-ink.info/colorcard/59.png

Very dark shading blues...

These shade very dark, almost completely black (darkest overall colors in the blue spectrum):

Thanks all for the help. Sokme of those inks I never paid much attention to in the past.

Are you sure the Organics Manganese doesn't lean green?

Not my sample.

I didn't buy a whole bottle as I fell head over heals in love with Blue Merle.

bardiir, LOVING your system. So technical and easy to use.

Forgive my ignorance, I didn't realise until about a minute ago that you could click on the links to reveal encyclopaedic sampling.

Fantastic!!!!

It DOES lean into the green on a technical scale. Nothing you will see with your bare eye. For your eyes this is a pretty pure blue. But if you really distaste green color then you might want to choose something with a purple lean as something pure blue or with a minimum green lean will produce a noticeable green tint on off-white not perfectly white paper that is yellowish by itself. Purplish tints will cancel that out.

I have read that Stipula Calamo black when somewhat diluted also comes up a very dark blue black,

As you can see, the IG version of Pelikan Blue Black is not as dark.

Okay, I take it back, Manhattan might be too blue. So I say, go with Midnight.
