Lamy 2K Nib Variation - Check This Out

OK. So up until now I have owned a fine nib 2K (bought < 6 months ago) and one ground by Pendleton, so I haven't had a frame of reference to compare my fine nib to other 2K's. Also I never looked closely at my 2K nib. Recently I traded for another fine nib 2K, because, heck, why not? I love 'em!

I decided to sell my newly acquired 2K (which writes beautifully and is in the classifieds, by the way ;) ) because I can't justify owning 3 2K's, and while taking pictures, I noticed that this 2K looked like it had way more tipping on it. So I took this picture to compare:

The new pen I'm selling is on the left, my old pen on the right. Both fine nibs, both are from the same (newest) generation.

From what I can see, the left nib is extended out from the feed more, the tipping looks more normal and there's plenty of it, and it writes smoother and broader than my other fine pen.

The pen on the right, my 6 month old fine nib, apparently has an alien for tipping. It's pushed back into the feed more, writes finer, and has more feedback than the new pen.

Both write splendidly!

Now, what in the heck do we make of this? And what in the heck are they doing down at the Lamy factory?

I have a Lamy 2000 purchased around December last year, and it better resembles the nib on the right (despite its being a M size). I have it with me right now so I was able to check, haha. There is some feedback, yes, but it's quite smooth enough to classify as glassy. Anyway, it looks as if Lamy's trying to save on tipping material and managed to improve their smoothening process. So I'm thinking that it's basically a case of a company changing up their operations for the better (more effort, less product used)?

Lamy have changed the way they attach the tipping on the 2000 nibs. The pen on the right seems to the latest way they do it from the examples in my collection, all bought new. I am not a fan of the newer L2K nibs.

Well the weird thing is, apparently this new pen was bought after mine. Perhaps the previous owner caught an older model?

Hmm... going to close my advert for the moment. That extra tipping could provide me the opportunity for a pretty sweet little stub..

Caution: I believe that is not extra tipping per se, but a gold "shelf" on the nib for maybe better support of the small tipping ball. You can clearly see the small tipping ball embedded in that. I took apart one of my newest Lamy2000M, am taking some pics have observed somethings new.

Hmm thanks for this. Might get a OM or B nib to make stub. I enjoy the old type tipping because it makes you hold the pen properly. Also slightly stubbish.
