Amber! Oh, wow! Would you recommend some favorite inks of yours that have good longevity?

I'm just getting started with fountain pens. I have 5 (wait while I go count them.... yes, five) bottles of ink.

Now, it's not enough to be fade resistant, if we want this person to be knee deep in inks - let's pick 5 inks that are pretty, fun, exciting and fade resistant. Inks need not FADE PROOF or WATER PROOF, but let's choose some inks that legible after a cuppa coffee or tea is spilled upon them, and will still be around even after left in the sun for a few months.

For some fade results you can see the results of the 2012 test here. You can choose from the inks that you think performed well and give our new FPNer some ideas.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The usual suspects (nano/carbon/pigment) behaved as expected, however... I was surprised to see Asa Gao perform so well, it is a FUN ink but I never thought of it as being fade resistant....

I had a similar reaction. I had forgotten it did so well.

The Pilot Iro inks are not water resistant, but they held up in fading.

Blacks are the most resilient and surprisingly, the easiest to clean. However, I am just not a huge fan of black. I love COLOR over the top color. BSB to me is WOW, happy.

So, a few inks that I keep coming back to as easy to use, fade resistant, bright and fun.....

  1. Noodler's American Eel - Blue ** Now it isn't waterproof by any stretch, but it's fade resistant.
  2. Noodler's V-Mail GI-Green - It will wash, but the text remains and it is fade resistant
  3. Noodler's V-Mail Midway Blue - It's turquoise not "blue" like eel blue, but it's water resistant and fade resistant.

I was glad to see J Herbin Rouge Hemitite held up well in the fade test. Really, you just can't have more fun with any one ink than this one, even considering it's staining and cleaning "issues".

I would consider any of these three to be acceptable. Tiananmen Red is similar to Diamine Dragon Red, but is nearly fade proof and it is water resistant. I will probably have to buy a bottle because I keep coming back to using the samples.

I seriously considered adding this to my list of 5 - the green sheen fades, but the red remains. I don't know if this result will happen with the next two bottles.

For every category, except water resistance, Iroshizuku inks seem to do well. I think I got a bit more fade out of the Northern sun up here in summer, but kinda surprised at that.

If it weren't for the cost, and the lack of water resistance, all of my inks would probably be Iroshizuku. Well, except maybe for black... Take-Sumi just isn't intense enough for me at times. I want my black ink to show the depths of despair and angst, and sometimes Take-Sumi just doesn't cut it. To me, black should seem to be a bottomless pit that you can stare into for a long, long time.

There's your Eel Blue, the 5th or 6th on down. It's amazing how little so many of them faded.

I went back and added the picture. I thought I had a better / bigger one.

Noodler's inks hold up really well.

Hello folks!

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. I was intrigued that Iroshizuku inks were ok as far as fading went, so I got Kon-peki and Ku-jaku. Love them. I read Levenger Cobalt held up well to fading and got that too. And Rouge Hematite.

I read Noodler's Walnut and Pelikan Black had a degree of water resistance so I got those.

I changed course when I realized that my closed journals aren't going to see a lot of light. So I got what made my heart beat fast: Stormy Grey, Tanna Japonensis, Red Dragon, Oxblood, Yamadori and Shigure. I addressed Christmas envelopes with Parker Penman Emerald!

Currently wallowing in wonderful ink! Hope you are all too!
