Pilot Custom 742 Sutab

My new Pilot 742 with sutab nib arrived yesterday. I've written approx 15 sides of A4 with it and I'm very happy with it. Highly recommended as an easy-to-use alternative to a music nib.

Apologies for poor quality photo.

I love the variation. Your handwriting is great; it has a lot a character.

Is Verdigris that blue, or does it lean towards the green end of the spectrum? Also, if you don't mind me asking, did you incur any custom charges?

Wow--that sutab (stub?) writes beautifully in your hand. And it wrote that way out of the box? Very nice!

Thank you! Pilot say that this nib has a broad vertical line and a fine medium horizontal line (by Japanese standards) and I'd certainly agree with that. It's not an exaggerated variation; it just helps add that bit of style to your writing. And it's so smooth. Great fun to write with. I usually use EF nd F nibs and find exaggerated stubs tiring to use - this one makes for comfortable daily use.

Sorry about my pic quality. It was taken under rubbish office lighting with a phone camera. Verdigris ink is a blue-black. Has a very slight green-grey tinge on Basildon Bond, which is a very slightly textured porous paper. I got some shading with this nib. Some think it's a boring colour but I love it. It's very under-stated, and has a generous flow. It's also a reasonable price (£4 for 50ml).

Re customs, no I didn't incur duty/taxes. Box was marked as 1,650 yen ;) A very helpful seller, with quick delivery.

Yes - I believe that is the Japanese word for stub. It wrote like that straight away. But then I have quite a few Pilot pens and they have all been excellent right from the get-go. They are my No 1 pen company. I have high expectations of manufacturing standards and QC and I expect all pens to perform well from the start. To be honest I rarely flush pens before use (depends on the manufacturer and the nib) and never adjust tines or feeds because of a fault. If they're duds, they get sent back. Just my way LOL.

I may have to purchase Verdigris soon - the price is more than reasonable for that quantity of ink, it would be silly not to! Thank you for bringing Pisuke2005 to my attention; I have just browsed his e-bay store and I am mentally compiling a list of future purchases.

If you happen to be interested in the Pilot Custom pens, this is an incredibly useful article comparing the models, which I always get very confused over. http://kmpn.blogspot.in/2011/06/pilot-custom.html

That's good to hear--that Pilots come out of the box writing well! I am looking at the 823 right now--though I wish it came with the sutab nib--or at least a BB. I wonder if pisuke2005 would be willing to switch nibs from a 743...

Thanks again!

Saskia_Madding (post #2 above) says she has an 823 with an SU nib, that she got from Pisuke. I'm sure she'll be able to advise.

Ah--I missed that! Thank you--I'll shoot her a pm.

I answered the PM, but I'll also copy it here, for anyone else interested. :)

"Actually, I got the 823 with a broad nib originally. I didn't even know the SU nib was an option. But then I saw on FPN that the Custom 743s come with SU nibs, and I read somewhere else that 743s and 823s both have the #15 nibs. The nibs are friction fit, so I ended up getting a 743 with SU nib from pitsuke and swapped the nib onto my 823. Voila! Then I sold the 743 for what I paid for it. I think all things considered, the whole exchange cost about $15 USD.

Having said all that, I am sure if you just message pitsuke, they will sell you one with the nib already swapped.

Please be warned that the stub on the 823/743 does not have a huge line variation. It's subtle, but I really like it. I just didn't want you to expect something really drastic, like the Stipula 1.1 stubs, and then be really disappointed when you get it.

I would add that pitsuke is a great ebay seller. I had several wonderful purchasing experiences with them/him/her, including sending them a message asking for a certain pen/nib combination and they got right back to me telling me they'd get it specially ordered for me. :)

Thanks Saskia. That's very helpful. I agree about the line variation, as I posted above. It's sold as a broad line on the vertical & fine medium line on the horizontal. Just enough to add a nice extra to hand-writing. And it's fun too. Also agree about pisuke. Good communication, fast delivery, and the tea bags are a nice touch. Great seller. :)

All of this makes me very hopeful about getting some good news from pisuke. Saskia, thanks again for your help (here and on PM), and thank you, migo!

I'll keep people posted on my progress!

I've been considering a Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with a smf nib. This review got me to thinking that a stub nib might lend a little line variation to my writing. To my surprize I was able to order a Pilot 912 with a SU nib for $50.12 off of Amazon from Santa Trading Japan. It sounds to good to be true. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks. Anyone have experience with Santa Trading Japan?

Yes - I've had 2 Pilot pens and some ink from him in the past. Not super-quick but no problems and items all delivered safely.

Yes, I ordered Pilot Custom 74 and Custom 742 pens from them through amazon.

It took about 4 weeks to get the pens, but they arrived with no problems.
