Revisiting Noodler's Periwinkle

After reading this thread I thought I would revisit Noodler's Periwinkle. I had previously reviewed it here and have rarely used it since...but that's going to change. I loaded a Noodler's Konrad with it and gave it a try in my Zequenz journal. Results were the same as in my review: dry and chalky looking but a beautiful color. Then I tried it on Tomoe River Paper with completely different results. It's as though the ink just LOVES the paper. The flow is good and when dry it still looks wet. It even produces shading and possibly sheen. Looking at a Perwinkle page across the table in the sunlight I see a lot of reflection. As you can see in the attached picture the ink looks considerably darker on TR. It is still Periwinkle, but a dark Periwinkle. Even though the flow is good on TR it is still a difficult starter and therefore not suitable for carrying about unless you carry a vial of water with you. What a difference paper makes. I really like the look of this ink on TR and will be writing letters with it. I was even inspired to purchase periwinkle sealing wax from Letter Seals.

Hmmm ... like you, I was not impressed with Periwinkle. But it seems as if the paper does indeed make the difference. Looks lovely, like the shading and variation in line. By the way, good cursive hand.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

It does look good on this paper. Honestly, I hated the ink. It dried up too quickly in all my pens (except a Preppy), and I was not impressed by its color. I no longer have the bottle, but I'm glad you're having luck with it.

Wow very pretty. I had troubles with mine and never tried it again.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Everybody's experience seems to be the same. I was surprised at what a difference paper could make. Should any of you Periwinkle owners also have a pad of Tomoe River paper and a Noodler's Konrad, please give it another try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hmm...I'll have to get a sample of the Eternal Periwinkle to try out for myself. I managed to snag two bottles of the Violet Vote Periwinkle while it lasted, so I am set for a while anyway, but I am a bit worried about what will happen when it runs out. I haven't heard anything more about making it a standard and I worry that it will not make it.

Herbin Lie de The, 1670 Rouge Hematite, Bleu Ocean, Lamy Turquoise, Rohrer & Klingner Salix, Sheaffer Skrip Blue-Black, OS Red Rubber Ball, Parker Quink Blue (India version)

Oh, so you're the one who took them all. ;) I wouldn't mind making a comparison between the two periwinkles but if the 2nd is not to be...well, I suppose it doesn't matter in the end. I hear I Pilot Iroshizuku Ajisai (hydrangea) is a good match to periwinkle. Still, the peculiarities of Noodler's Periwinkle are livable provided one has a Konrad and TR paper. It's really a lovely color with interesting characteristics with the right pen/paper combo. Not many inks make me say, "Wow...that's beautiful...." True, ink color is completely subjective, but I like it quite a lot. I hope you find the inky solutions you're looking for.

I thought about grabbing more, but wanted to save some for others :)

Ajisai is a pretty enough color, but it is more blue. I wouldn't call it periwinkle. That's the only one of the 'periwinkle' inks I had to compare myself. I put the comparison in my review. I am going to pick up some Herbin Bleu Pervenche pretty soon. But it's even further, more aqua turquoise it seems.
