I did not think to look at the various nibs that can be fitted.

I have bought a matteblack Gama Hawk.

Think I will order a spare nib or two when I buy the next one as a present for my son

Hari yet another great review. Just as I was about to hit the buy button at Asapens for a shiny Gamma Hawk I find this. Now I'm locked in the paralysis of analysis. My heart says shiny Hawk with your recommended Deccan 35mm nib. Please nudge me either way. I'm up here in England sat on the fence looking at two very classy pens.

I don't have the Hawk.

Have a look at the new Padpad as well to aid your decision.

I don't know about your preferences to recommend a nib to you. I put the nibs of my choice in my pens, but many a times they might not be what someone else would also like, nibs preferences are very personal.

Best way is to enquire with the vendor about what options they have after informing them about your preferences.

Best

Hari

I have fitted my shiny gama hawk with a wality Medium dual tone nib. And i am loving it.

You can ask ASA to fit the FP with nib of your choice.

The nib is slightly crumpled at the tip?

It's good that they listened and learned that opening an account before you can see the prices is NOT the best way to operate.

Glad they made the changes. I'll probably be buying some things very soon.

I have had good experience buying from them.

I have converted the nib into a partly fude nib. A full fude conversion was too broad for my taste. I have found these wality dual tones to be quite softer than the #10 nibs which i find to be on stiffer side.

I put my savings to test

Lamy & Pilot FPs the Best

No more I even think of the rest

(Preference Fine and Extra Fine Nibs)

Pen is meant for writing - not for looking :-)

Sometimes the inner cap on the pen has done the fude conversion for me. ;)

I don't think that many options are there in the first place, since Gem provides only one type of nib, but do enquire with them to see what aftermarket upgrades they have.

Lol. That conversion would make the nib scratchy - a downside of using large nibs on smaller FPs

  • 3 weeks later...

I've just received mine - once filled with ink (Diamine Florida Blue) it took a while to start writing, but once started... I can't stop it from leaking. It's not a matter of warm or cold hands, it has spread ink in my computer bag and on a notebook (my laptop is safe, thanks God).

Is replacing the feeder the only way to stop leakage?

The following procedure for filling and priming an Indian ED may be helpful:

  1. The first thing to do is to thoroughly rinse the barrel and section in running water and dry them.
  2. Apply silicone grease on the section threads and screw and unscrew the section a couple of times to let the grease penetrate.
  3. Fill the ink into the barrel using a ED or a syringe upto the level where the threads end (you should be able to see the threads; where the threads end you see the ink level).
  4. Now screw in the section carefully halfway.
  5. Invert the pen now(nib pointing down into mouth of open ink bottle) and screw in the section fully (ink will drip into the bottle while screwing in), the excess air in the barrel will force ink out through the feed priming it.
  6. Now tighten the section fully and wipe point to remove excess ink.

This priming and greasing procedure needs to be followed only when a new dry pen is being filled for the first time or after every ink change.

Very Important: Indian ED pens will tend to flow more/blot as the ink level in the barrel gets lower(This is due to the simple feeders used). Always keep the ink level more than 1/2 of the full ink capacity of the barrel. It is advisable to carry the pen in such a way that the nib is always pointing up, not side ways or nib down for obvious reasons. I prefer clipped to the shirt pocket carry.

I hope the above helps. If it does not, there is some defect in your pen and you must contact the seller who sold you the pen.

Regards,

Hari

There is lot of discussion relating to the same issue in that thread

Eventhough you have already filled the FP. The step 5 suggested by Hari above should be followed at every refill.

I modified one Kuyil and Hawk for JoWo #6 and M800. The pens now have C/C capability when the JoWo is installed.

The trio of Eyas/Hawk/Kuyil shown with JoWo #6 fitted: enjoy the pics(sorry for the grainy, hand held, auto exposure pictures ).

Very nice. Hope Gama start providing these as an option. BTW I think a #8 nib would look awesome in the Hawk or Kuyil.

# 8 of JoWo? Isn't that a gold nib and frightfully expensive, from what I have heard?

Yes. I think it is gold only. But for ~275 you get a nice ebonite pen with a huge nib. Not too bad compared to a m1000, 149 or a Sailor KOP.

Newton's pens have them for 200.

http://newtonpens.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/8-nibs-are-here/

I am assuming you could get them from other sources for similar prices.

let me look into it. I don't have the dimensions for the JoWo no 8, so I can't say if they will fit into the medium sized Gamas like Kuyil and Hawk.

FWIW, M1000 nib unit is in the same price ball park:

Hmm... that is a very good price for the m1000 nib unit. It (m1000) is certainly longer but I don't know if it bigger/smaller than the #8.
