The Year Of Nakaya

KarloT

Recommended Posts

When 2013 rolled in, I had one Nakaya in my box - a Briar Deep with a Yoshida modified Music nib. It was a great pen but something about its handling kept it out of my regular rotation. Selling it to a pen friend allowed me to fund a Naka-Ai from John Mottishaw.

This is what has happened since then...

I swear I didn't see these follow me home. :)

From top to bottom: Decapod Twist in heki tamenuri (0.7mm Yoshida stub), Neo Standard in Shiro tamenuri (Soft Medium), Decapod in kuro tamenuri (Music) and a Naka-Ai in heki tamenuri (0.8mm Mottishaw CI).

Great Nakaya family, what a year! :D Very happy for you and that was some exciting nib choices you had made :) Would also love to see uncapped photos! You are a lucky one that can write with all these tonight :) :) :)

Could you compare the feel & your preference in size/shape/weight between the neo-standard and the naka-ai?

I like both. The Neo has a longer and more tapered section. The Naka-Ai's is identical to that on the standard and long Piccolo.

The Neo looks more visually proportioned but the Naka-Ai feels better balanced in hand. The tapered tail seems to be polarizing, and I do have friends who cannot overcome its shape.

Forced to choose between the two, and I'm not hoping I will ever be, I'd go Naka-Ai.

Lovely set you have there. Your nib selection is very interesting and would it be possible for a post showing a comparison ? Sort of got an urge to look again at Nakaya (despite the current beating by some) and I lean towards what you like. I do have an as new Nakaya Long Piccolo, its not that I dont get on with it I just feel that nib wise the profile could be more to my liking. I am in the process of seperating my 'keep forever and hand down to others' from the 'very nice but bye now' and the Nakaya is in neither as yet.

Now that I'm looking closer at the photo, I'm remembering Leigh's shiro tamenuri (must upload those photos from the Pen Posse Santa Cruz in, eek, October!). Is yours the same shade as hers? Man, that was a lovely, lovely color. I like my shiro tamenuri (Negoro), but it is darker than hers.

Been feeling a Nakaya tingle lately.... Sigh.

Hi Lisa!

The top coats are identical but the base tones are different. Here is a picture of the two pens:

The Portable Writer has a slightly darker base compared to the Neo. Leigh also has a string rolled Piccolo in shiro, and that one actually looks more terracotta.

(Pardon the pic. It was taken on the fly and in the wild so there was no time to wipe them down. :) )

Hi Ian!

I'll try to get some decent pics next week. Better to use a camera than a phone for such shots.

What nib do you have on your Long Piccolo?

Beautiful pens, Karlo. Thanks for sharing.

I share your mysterious ailment. I received my third Nakaya yesterday, and my fourth is on order.

As I look at other fine pens and consider buying them, I find myself converting their prices to Nakaya units before determining their value to me.
