Kaweco Aubergine

Because someone in my household accidentally threw my Kaweco converters away, I had to order another one and had to also order a bottle of ink to justify the p&p costs :) Yay me!

So, this is Kaweco Aubergine. There's no photo of the bottle this time, because it's just a boring standard bottle and actually some other brands like Pelikan and Barock use exactly the same one. I don't think anyone will ever buy this ink for the bottle. Fortunately, the ink itself is much more unique than the bottle it comes in.

I haven't had a new un-reviewed ink with special features for quite some time. You know, stuff like incredible shading, extreme sheen, or something like that. At first, I thought this ink was just the same: The shading is not very pronounced, there is no sheen whatsoever, it is not very highly saturated. But this ink does have its advantages. Well, it looks nice, but the hidden superpower is the flow, very low bleed-through and feathering. The ink flow is so fantastic, I never had railroading or skipping in any pen I've used it in - including my a bit problematic Dilly and Baoer with flex nibs.

If you're looking for an ink of such a colour for a flex nib, this will be my recommendation.

This is a very nice colour and I'll investigate it further. Thanks for the review.

I am quite fond of Kaweco's ink. I didn't know it came in bottles. Wish it was available that way in the US. Seems I can only get cartridges.

For a shot of a bottle (in red), see their site http://www.kaweco-pen.com/en/ and then open their catalog and go to page 26.

Pelikan and Waterman bottles are great, they tip letting you get the last drops of ink.

I like inks that shade...even average. Thanks for reviewing.

So interesting - have you ever tried deAtrementis Aubergine? I agree with Bo Bo Olson, deAt Aubergine doesn't shade - but is another gorgeous dark purple like this one. I think I'll have to get some Kaweco cartridges just out of curiosity. I've never seen this ink in bottles either. Thanks for your review!

Thanks for reviewing this. Kaweco inks are very good indeed: their sepia/brown is a favourite of mine.

The bottles are a new thing, only available in Europe right now, and they're ridiculously expensive: I can't understand why, when their cartridges are actually reasonably priced!

Spooky coincidence; I've just now put a Kaweco Aubergine/Lavender cartridge in one of my pens, a Platinum 3000A (medium). It's a gorgeous shade of purple, perfect for personal correspondence.

I too find this ink to have more shading than De Atramentis' Aubergine. But it is also a lot lighter, less saturated. So to say, more washed out. But that also revealed a better maintenance in the sense of faster/more easy washing and rinsing of your pens. A few other details can be seen here.

Two slightly negative things for me are as follows: (1) The label on the bottle doesn't say what's in it. Although you might say "Hey, that label looks pretty much like an aubergine or lavender colour", my seeing somewhat similar label colours on their lagoon blue and blue black made it hard to be certain that I know for sure what to buy. But a comparison of all 8 Kaweco colours as indicated above or a request for a hard-copy catalog in the store remedied this situation. There is also no box offered with the bottle, but that is also the case for all De Atramentis inks.

(2) I also find that the bottle itself leaves something to be desired. This bottle -- of Pelikan 4001 design -- is nothing special these days but more importantly IMO, the cap is poorly made, just like the older MB caps, hard to open and hard to close. I hope it doesn't leak or spill out someday! Now if they could only come up with a perfect cap like those newest MB, CdA and GvF-C creations.

Kaweco bottled inks are available at Goulet, but I don't see Aubergine listed.

It appears that Kaweco, just like Waterman, has rebranded, or at least renamed, its inks.

I don't know if color and behavior has changed too.

Is this the same color as Kaweco Summer Purple?

I'd like to know as well.

From what I can tell, and I could be wrong, Summer Purple = Aubergine and Paradise Blue = Caribbean Turquoise. They latter is particularly interesting!
