My Parson's Essential - What A Pen!

My first "serious" fountain pen was my Parson's Essential. It wasn't a lot in the grand scheme of things at £39, but I still had to think hard before spending *that* much money on a pen. I got the piano black version with a standard medium nib.

That pen & I were very happy together until 6 months ago when I lost it :(. That day is etched in my memory. I was really upset - I searched everywhere but there was no sign. So after the required period of mourning I resigned myself to the loss. I considered buying a replacement but for some reason I didn't.

Then this morning............... I found it!. The little tinker had slipped inside the lining of a handbag & disappeared from view. Well, was I happy or what? I couldn't wait to use it again.

Now considering that this pen had remained unused for 1/2 a year, fully inked, I opened the cap with trepidation. I expected some leakage, certainly some crusty bits and was prepared to do a full clean.

But I put that wonderfully smooth nib onto the paper and...... it wrote absolutely perfectly. Immediately. No blobs, no skips, no complaints. Impeccable ink flow. Oh I'd forgotten just what a joy it is to write with.

What a star of a pen!

Marie

ps sorry to bore you with my tale but I'm just so happy - and impressed - and had to share this with you poor long-suffering readers.

pps I promise I will be kind to it and give it some love and attention later today with a nice clean

Congratulations on finding your long-lost love!

I have only lost two "valuable" pens. The first was a Cross Apogee that I rather liked. It's been gone for 6 years or so

and I still hope to find it in a box or jacket somewhere :( . The second, a Fisher Space Pen, resurfaced unexpectedly when I helped a friend vacuum his car. It was under his passenger seat for 6 months! I'm sure this is common with Space Pens, being shaped not unlike suppositories hehe :D .

I loathe the day that I misplace another pen!

Early this year I came across a Parker New Duofold (late 1960s) not wonderful condition but wrote superbly and was cheap. I thought "I'll have that, I can take it out and about and not worry if I lose it"

A couple of months later I lost it and was distraught! I kept telling myself it was silly and it I only had it so I didn't have to risk losing a more valuable pen - but it wrote so well!

Weeks later the dog's bed was washed and - there was my pen! Not a tooth mark on it so I have no clue as to how it got there. But what joy at its return!

It seems all tend to form what might be regarded as unhealthy attachments.

We probably all have a cheaper pen that we 'wouldn't worry about losing'. But if it did come to losing it we'd miss it because we'd become so familiar with it and attached to it.

It is great finding lost pens again isn't it. Like my old, old Pelikan from the 80's and my Parker from the 90's which turned up again in the depths of an old desk.

Glad you were reunited with your old friend again! :)

Huzzah! I was heartbroken along with you as I read this, and overjoyed with you when you say you found it again. I've only had my Parson's for just shy of 3 months, but I absolutely love it. I use it daily at school for notes, and last week I even wrote a 2.5 page essay with the pen. I feel your pain as well, I lost my workhorse Lamy AL-STAR pen 6 months ago and I haven't found it (lost it in a snowbank on an unfamiliar road, I couldn't tell you where it dropped now).

Glad to hear all is well with your pen now.

Some pics would be nice.

One boring blue, one boring black 1mm thickness at most....

Then there are Fountain Pens with gorgeous permanent inks..

Some pics would be nice.

Others would not. It is possible to have a conversation without resorting to illustrations.

(There are lots of good photos of the Parson's Essential around if you are curious.)

I love stories with a happy ending. I have "lost" a pen only to find it several months later.

Unfortunately, the more expensive pens have been lost forever (so far anyway).

Now, to Google Parson's Essential....

And the results of the Google search: ta-daa!

But you might have to click on Images. Hrm.

"Others would not" really? haha you made my day. Conversation is in the silly joke picture, and if you fon't like particular pen pictures with particular hand writing just say so in a different place instead of opposing a someones funny request. I have 3 of those all colors and still like the personal pictures with writing samples. Wouldn't I ? :D

Why do you want to see pics of my handbag? ;-)

Yep we need a pic of the split in the lining that stole the pen! :D

Down with the thieving lining split! Long live the fountain pen, death to her enemies! :P

Congratulations on finding your old friend.

I consider the Parson's to be the best value pen on the market, right now -- especially if one doesn't like the Lamy Safari. I have nothing against the latter, but the Parson's is a much classier ride, and I (like the original poster) have never had a squidge of difficulty with mine.

A superb work-horse that does darned well in the show ring, as well.

So glad that you were able to find it. The only "nice" pen I have ever lost and grieved mightily over was a ballpoint. A Parker 45 Flighter - Made in UK version. Left the car to go into a business, by the time I got back it was gone. Fell out of my shirt pocket. :(

I'm pleased that you found your pen. A Parson's Essential is far too good a pen to stay lost and unused. Amazing quality in a pen so inexpensive and it compares very well with pens costing many hundreds of £££s or $$$s - yes really it does, it is that good!

For those in the USA it is worth noting that the pen seems to have been available previously from Danitrio (before they decided to concentrate on Maki-e pens) although the Danitrios were in different colours. I can't confirm that the nibs were the same quality however.

Pens and paper everywhere, yet all our hearts did sink,

Pens and paper everywhere, but not a drop of ink.

The Parson's Essential is now available on e-Bay for the standard price of £39--shipping to the US is £10. This comes out to approximately $80 --not too bad for what (I'm hoping) is a first-class pen...!

I lost a $600.00 pen once, and was "sick" for two weeks. Then, lo and behold, I put some pants on that had been hanging in my closet for awhile, and I ran my hand down into the right picket, and THERE IT WAS!
