Staples Sustainable Earth Paper Available By The Ream

I was just on Staples website looking for some paper and they now have the Sustainable Earth available by the ream for $6.99. The last time I looked it was only available by the case which was $60!

Sorry if this is old news but I am pretty excited because I would never spend $60 on paper but I sure will spend $7!

You can buy it by the ream at local stores also. I went in to buy a ream of 32lb paper, but, instead, found the Sustainable Earth paper, so I bought 2 reams of them instead.

I'm glad to hear this is available by the ream and in-store. I bought it by the case and am very happy with it, but it would've been nice if I could have just bought one test ream beforehand.

Thanks for heads up. It wasn't in my local store the last week, so it's time for a little online shopping: there's some stuff I'm imagining I need.

I wonder if you need to ask for it -- I didn't see it when I was in my local one recently (they seem to have mostly done away with the Sustainable Earth composition books).

Great paper...I got a 10 ream box or two, on special for our office at church, for about $30 per box. Nice feel to the paper and seems to work well with fountain pens

My local Stapes in Foster City, CA does not have it.

But I ordered in on their store kiosk, free shipping to my door.

update: I got an email from Staples, I should get the paper tomorrow by UPS.

Now I can see what this paper is all about.

At least 20 pound paper is heavier than the light weight stuff that is in the notebooks and composition books.

It arrived today, as scheduled.

It seems to be pretty decent paper.

It handles my WET M tip pen w/o feathering or blotting or bleed through. I was impressed.

It even handled my italic pen.

The shadowing is not bad, the back side of the page is quite usable, more so than my Brazil notebooks with their lighter/thinner paper.

I did notice that on the back side of the sheet, I could feel where the paper absorbed the ink. It seems to have swelled just a bit. I did not notice if my other papers did that also. But it makes sense, the paper has to absorb the ink, and will swell as it does so.

I did notice that the paper took a bit longer to dry than my Brazil notebook paper.

The ink sat on the surface of the paper for a few seconds, then was absorbed straight down.

So you need to give it time to absorb the ink before you turn the page or put your hand on it.

While not a HARD SMOOTH surface, my XF tip pen did not have any trouble writing on the paper.

I would say the surface is just a tiny bit less smooth than the Brazil filler and notebook paper.

But for the HARD SMOOTH surface, you will still have to go to the 32# HP Premium paper.

At 20# weight, it was easy to see my guide sheet under the paper.

This is a consideration as you get heavier paper where it becomes harder to see the guide sheet.

For only $7 a ream, definitely a good paper to use.

Thanks guys.

Yes, it's bagasse. They just don't call it that any more. I did a review of it in this thread.

Well the paper I got is worse then cheap copy paper. It's more rough than the copy paper we use at work giving all of my pens much more feedback. I'm not very happy with this paper which is weird because the sustainable earth legal pads are fantastic.

My store didn't have, but I ordered a ream and it arrived the next day, free shipping to store. I find it a very good deal - I consider it to be pretty smooth though not glassy, about an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Even my Japanese fine nibs feel pleasant on it - just enough feedback to prevent skating, though not scratchy at all. I smooth nearly all of my nibs, so YMMV.

It's behavior is way above the Xerox brand copy paper used at work. My Custom 742 FA loaded with Pilot Blue Black produces no show through or bleed through on the Staples paper even with flexing, but bleeds right through the Xerox without flexing. The line is not bloated, nor is there feathering.

I do think if feels a little different from the lined bagesse, which to me feels a little smoother and has a bit harder finish. The lined paper did bloat the line a little, but didn't feather - the line was wider but had a tight edge. The copy paper version doesn't have the same crisp feel that the thinner lined paper does, feels more like a standard paper. I think I'll order another few reams before they change it for the worse.

@L51

Another option is, go to the Staples store and order it on their kiosk.

Then you can have it shipped to your door, no shipping charge.

That is what I did.

But, if that is the only reason to go to Staples, the drive to the store might not be worth the savings in shipping cost.

If they don't have it in-store, you can order single reams online, too. Like ac12 said, order it from their kiosk and shipping is free.
