Waterproof Purple Ink

Mesu

Recommended Posts

Purple and deep pink in different shades is my most used ink color and sometimes it becomes necessary to have a waterproof one.

Shading is not a must but shouldn't feather on copier paper. Free flowing wet ink would be an added bonus. Would be used mostly with an F or M nib.

Please suggest waterproof purple inks, something similar to Diamine Imperial Purple and Syrah.

Thanks in advance...

have you tried Camel Violet, i find it quite waterproof. Also the R&K Scabiosa is a violetish IG ink, slightly washed out but does ok on the WR front...

The R&K Scabiosa is a great ink and I've got all my R&K from The Writing Desk here in the UK. There must be other suppliers in the rest of Europe though.

Scabiosa is absolutely waterproof.

Here is a sample where I tried to wash it off.

Noodler's Kung Te-Cheng is purple and completely waterproof. No smearing what so ever.

After I left my computer, I felt silly for not saying KTC. KTC is nursery proof*.

*Nursery Proof. We used it at our plant nursery and growing yard. Years in the sun, water and dirt. KTC withstood it all and lasted much longer than the signs. KTC is an amazing ink.

I like purple, and generally insist on my inks being waterproof. That has led to problems with the inks mentioned above. With R&K Scabiosa, as shown in amberledavis's photo above, part of the ink runs badly when wet, although it leaves behind a legible waterproof residue. Actually, if you continue "washing" the page as I do in my tests, the purple will wash off entirely, leaving just the fainter waterproof part. Even without that, the color is a bit pale, although not unattractive. Noodler's Kung Te Cheng and La Reine Mauve are both attractive colors, and really waterproof. Unfortunately, both have tended to clog the nicer pens that I wanted to use them in, and I also tend to get worse nib creep with LRM than with any other ink I've tried.

Of the three, I guess the Scabiosa is the most practical ink, as it hasn't caused problems in any of my pens. I don't like the way so much of the ink will wash off a page, but what you've written will still be readable, and after all, waterproof inks are just insurance for when things go bad. Still looking for an ink with the beautiful color of KTC or LRM that will behave better in my "nice" pens. Waterman Tender Purple looks good, but unfortunately is not waterproof at all.

In the meantime, although I'd like to use purple more, most of my writing is in blue, where I have better waterproof choices.

De Atramentis Aubergine, a dark purple with good water resistance.

This picture is of writing only a few minutes old then soaked for five minutes. Some ink ran, but not too much.

I agree that KTC and LRM are more finicky than Scabiosa. What about Organic Studios Jane Austen Violet? I've been pleased with it on first pass.

Seems like the obvious choice to me. It's been a favorite of mine for many years, one of the best-behaved and lowest-maintenance of all the "bulletproof" inks.

Thanks to everyone who has responded

@pterodactylus

I am from Bangalore -> India -> Asia. Except for Diamine, Private Reserve and J Herbin, all others need to be ordered online.

@kugelschreiber

De Atramentis Aubergine is the kind of ink i am looking for. I don't want the majority of the color to be washed away when the ink comes in contact with water. Thanks for suggesting this ink.

@tonybelding

Thanks for suggesting another potential ink. Could you please post pics of the water test? Couldn't find it.

Worth a shot, thanks. Saved it on my Amazon wishlist.

As far as I can tell, this is not something they currently make. It's not listed under either name on the Noodler's website, and it isn't carried by Goulet's. Probably discontinued since you bought yours.

Quick question- does anyone know if the scabiosa is as dry as salix? I like salix, and scabiosa looks nice, but it's too dry for me.

Hi AndyLa,

I think it´s like Salix.

Btw. I never thought of it as a very dry ink (at least not like Pelikan 4001).

E.g. I use Salix in my Noodler´s Ahab which has quite a lot railroading problems with many other inks but not with Salix,

Till now it perform best with Salix.

Thanks. An exclusive hadn't occurred to me. I've bookmarked the site to look at later.
