How To Recognize Old Formula J Herbin 1670 Rouge?

Does anybody know if there is a way to recognize the old formula J Herbin 1670 Anniversaire Rouge Hematite bottles? I would like to stock up on some gold dust before it goes away….

Ref: https://fivecatpenagerie.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/re-rouge-hematites-sheeny-golden-bits/

Here’s the response I received from J. Herbin regarding my question about their dulling down of Rouge Hematite:

Yes, we had to take the gold like die out of the formula as it had a
tendency to thicken too fast and there was a danger of clogging some
fountain pens.
I’m very sorry.

I guess I’ll be taking only tiny sips from my bottle of the original formula like people do with Parker Penman Sapphire and MB British Racing Green…

*le sigh*

I seem to be an outlier, but I like the new formula. I always felt the boldness of the red was compromised by the green-gold metallic sheen. Improved flow and reduced buildup and clogging are just added bonuses.

I can say that my bottle came looking like two colors of ink. I hope someone can tell you the difference before you buy.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I purchased a bottle from someone a few months back, and was completely disappointed by the fact that the gold was missing - I honestly thought I had a bad batch. Come to find out they changed what they were doing, which kind of stinks, as that was the only reason I had to buy this ink. Yeah, it behaved terribly, but I was going to use dedicated and dip pens for it.

There are worse things in life, but it certainly didn't turn out the way I intended.

I left my bottle for a week or two and saw a satisfying yellow deposit at the bottom. I will buy another bottle or two from the same supplier on the assumption they are all the same batch. Fingers crossed

Maybe not. The pigment is/was an interesting novelty, and overall, I was impressed with the ink. I enjoyed my 2ml sample, but the pigment is also what persuaded me not to buy a bottle. For me it made the ink an interesting "toy" to play with, not something practical. What I liked best about the ink was that particular shade of red.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

You're not an outlier. I've seen others posting they liked the color but the sheen was in the way, or the maintenance was too high.

But I'm in the other boat. I didn't get mine until recently, and was sad to find most of the shimmery was gone.

Perhaps we ought to start up an exchange thread? Where people who have old 1670 never used because of sediment/sheen issues can exchange with disappointed owners of the new formula. Thoughts?

Go for it --- though you might be able to PM Cybea and Jon right from this thread.

Eek - I've been reminded as a moderator - that doing an exchange as a thread may be questionable under the new rules - and should probably be classified ad. I will post up my thoughts to the moderator forum, but for now, (please), don't start a new thread. I'll get back with you shortly.

FWIW I bought my first bottle 2 years ago and since I never ever saw any gold (however much I physically misused it prior to any attempt to write), I bought it again a year later (thinking that I had received a bad batch). Again, much to the same dismay. Positive point: good to know that I now don't have to create any new suspicions.

I was looking at this review.

First pancakes' pictures show an ink that is much oranger than my bottle.

Ditto... to repeat... my two bottles are both definitely a darker red (and not a tick orangy), with absolutely zero gold, or even gold-green sheen.

So, I decided to test my bottle and get a feel for the differences.
