Lamy Blue Black

Ink: Lamy Blue Black (Iron Gall)

Pens Used: Franklin-Christoph Model 02 (M) and Lamy Safari (M)

Paper: Georgia Pacific Premium Bright Paper (90g/m^2)

Lamy Blue Black is one of the few remaining iron gall style inks available. It comes in Lamy’s standard, amazing ink bottle with the ink well and wiping paper, which is way too convenient. The color writes in a very gray-blue, but dries almost entirely gray/black (hint of blue). The ink performs well out of both pens tested, and doesn’t really exhibit any bad traits. The color is lightly saturated, so does exhibit some shading, but not like the dye-based shading of some other colors. It receives the ‘High-Maintenance’ rating due to its iron gall properties, even if it isn’t as acidic as some vintage inks. The 3-Star rating is due to the lackluster color – if you are looking for an iron gall ink, it gets a 5-Star rating – but on the grand scheme of inks, its a 3-Star all around ink.

On the chemical tests, the color showed the expected water resistance of an iron gall – enough for this to be waterproof. Acetone had little effect, but the bleach was powerful enough to oxidize the iron gall portion of the ink and nearly remove the color from the paper.

Why don't you post your review in the forum?.

My sentiments exactly. As a general rule, i don't click on most links that people put on this forum for the simple fact that they may be loaded with malware.

EDIT: added a postscript.

Hmm, I'm supposing that it has something to do with bringing up the visitor count on whatever site the OP is linking to. Generally speaking, wanting to promote your own site isn't a bad thing, really, but for the reason stated above (i.e. possible malware infestation), I'm nonetheless reluctant to click on the above link.

I did Google reviews on Lamy B/B and clicked the result leading to MYI's page, though. I could just be paranoid for doing so, but that's just how it is.

The review itself is a bit terse, but this is coming from a guy who wrote a 7-page (Arial 11 on MS Word) review on a fountain pen, so my perception may be the tiniest bit skewed :P

I generally agree with the OP's impressions on the ink, but I'd have given it a 3.5, personally; I use this ink daily, if for no other reason than because it'd have been a waste if I didn't. I bought the 50mL bottle for the blotting paper XD

Cheers!

P.S.

As far as I know, Lamy Blue-Black is no longer produced as an iron-gall ink. If my memory serves me correctly, they changed the formulation a few years back. Whether Lamy B/B really was an iron-gall ink at some point in the past (I've only been using fountain pens for around 8-9 months, you see), I have no idea. All I'm sure of is that the current Lamy B/B ink is not an iron-gall ink.

Personally, I'm not too fond of the current Lamy Blue Black which dye based and not an iron gall. The color isn't the darkest blue black out there. Like Lyander, I too recently picked up a bottle for the design and the paper.

As for the OP, yes, I too would prefer the review to be directly posted here, this *is* the Ink Reviews section. I'm not sure though if it makes sense to review the iron gall version now since it isn't in the market any longer. Reviews are supposed to help people make purchase decisions. Unfortunately in this case, should someone want the ink based on the review, the unavailability in the market would surely disappoint.

Thanks for the tip on malware...running computer scan now.

Mostly I don't look into links...to lazy.

Now, fearing the plague, won't be clicking on private sites at all.

I was interested in the shading of the ink.

In hindsight, this ink isn't all too bad. It's a bit too lightly saturated for my tastes in writing, but the shading characteristics are excellent for drawing and the like!

I just received a bottle of this ink as a gift and I think any review of Lamy ink must include a mention that the bottle is really cool. Much to my surprise, it fits in the old school ink well hole.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The new blue-black is indeed not IG based, and you may have been lucky in snagging an old bottle, because they stopped a couple of years back. The new blue-black is not water resistant at all, which is one way to check.

I just got my first bottle of lamy ink so have been reading a lot of reviews on it. I think I made a good choice. I can't use it until after Christmas though because I got my fiance a bottle as well and I don't want her to know I went to the shop.
