Marbling Paper

Recommended Posts

I love the look of marbled paper and tried making some at home. There are lots of YouTube videos and online instructions available --- plus tons of better examples. I'm using any sheets that comes out light to write letters on and the ones that come out more vibrant colors are cut in thirds and used for letter wraps.

I pieced together a method to do this cheaply with ingredients I could buy locally: cornstarch, alum, liquid acrylic paint and paper... which I've got lots and lost of.

.... and yes, it looks a little bit like the refrigerator art your kids bring home for school. BTW, they often use unscented shaving cream instead of cornstarch when doing this as a kid's projects.

Funny, I just saw some gorgeous examples on Etsy too.... but I think those were from Canada.

Actually, my girlfriend makes these papers in a traditional way and she sells them, thought she mainly uses them in bookbinding, since she is a bookbinder. This technique, along with the paste paper technique, is one of my favourites.

I was going to ask: have you done any paste paper work? I've done quite a bit of paste paper now but have yet to try marbling of any kind. I've been doing it for bookbinding projects...

No, I don't even really know what that is.... so can you tell me the basics?

I've posted this elsewhere, but musicians I admire used a local bindery doing their own marbling as a foreground to some of their music. I hope you enjoy it...

I'm posting some things in more than one place too. Is there any protocol or etiquette about that? In any case I enjoyed this video. :) Thanks.

As far as posting, it is what it is. I have friends in many places. :) Glad you enjoyed it!

Essentially it is: laying paste (usually homemade from corn starch or various other things) that has been colored with something (usually acrylics) on paper and dragging various items through it or otherwise making patterns and shapes (some of my favorite tools for this: chopsticks, combs, a wallpaper texturize, sponges, a weird thing I made with some old forks). Kind of fingerpainting for adults.

This is a good site to see some examples and learn the basics of how to do it. It's fun!

Thanks for the interesting info.

I never looked, thinking it was just some sort of antique no longer done technique, in all I'd ever seen it on was high classed antique books.

Obviously I don't buy high classed modern books. LOM forces me into the cheaper non-leather and marbled paper books. I go to the wrong book stores.
