Sailor Bung Box Ruby

A while ago, a long long while, I asked the inestimable Sam_Capote, who I had previously assumed owned every ink under the sun if he had tried out Bung Box inks made by Sailor. He had never heard of the inks and proceeded to go through hell and high water working with a forwarding service to get them to him. He very nicely put up some samples, which after almost a year, I consulted before I finally got some of the inks for myself.

Instead of going with a forwarding service, I asked cool-japan on ebay about it, the amazing guy who has been selling me all the Kobe inks I have reviewed recently.

II have a very rocky relationship with red inks by Sailor, but this one has *almost* won me over. Although it does have a bit of rose in the lighter shaded areas, it doesn't feel overwhelming.

It looks great on all paper, especially Rhodia dotPads, where the sheen shines through ...

... and it has got some really nice shading.

The only downside is the price. When I asked cool-japan why he didn't normally stock the inks, he told me it was because he couldn't get as good a price for the Bung Box inks as he was getting for the Kobe ones, and he didn't think anyone would want to pay $40 USD for a 50 mL bottle of ink. Considering the shipping was free and there were no customs charges, I didn't feel it was painfully expensive.

Nice red. But it doesn't remind me of any real "ruby". But more of blood, which, again, isn't all that bad. Honestly. But I think if I come up with the dough, I'll stick to the other two.

Nice shading. Thank you for sharing!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I just ordered this ink and two other bottles by writing directly to info@bung-box.com and they sent me a quote. Very excited to try these inks. 2100¥ per bottle for the ink and 3200¥ to ship three bottles and a pen to canada.

I've kept an eye on Sailor Inks for a while, and the only one I have is the Jentle Grenade.

Is there any place where there's a list of all the inks available? Seems like between the Jentle, Kobe and Bung Box, there are too many Sailor ink colors to keep track of.

There is now a thread that has nearly all the 200+ Sailor made exclusive inks listed in it.

I believe the other name for the Bung Box Ruby is Tears of a Clown.

Saskia,

Now that you've had even more inks from Bung Box... do you ever use Tears of a Clown? I found that my bottle had GREAT shading and I loved it... and used it a LOT until I found Red Cashmere.

No, I really don't ever use it. I am not a huge fan of rosey reds, and so I like this one, but I don't love it. Once I got Hitchcock and Red Cashmere, most of the rosey reds I own have fallen by the wayside. I think I ended up selling this as samples at the Toronto Pen Show.

Does that mean you are enjoying Red Cashmere?

BTW, I agree, I haven't used this much since Red Cashmere became part of my life.

I will take what remains of the bottle off your hands - I finally tried the sample you gave me and LOVE it!
