What Do You Do With Severely Scratched And Dented Pens?

Blazing

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I bought my first fountain pen two or three months ago in the LE 2012 Safari. I've been using it for school work and a few other students, some of who I know closely, have been stealing my pen behind my back and treating it with no thought to the value compared to their own pens. This has caused them to become severely scratched and even dented in some parts which I can't help but notice when looking at the pen.

So, what do you do with them?

If you are asking about the other students a baseball bat (or other large solid object) judiciously applied to the area around the head and shoulder should stop the stealing activity...

If you are aksing about the pen it sounds like a job for a professional restorer...

As far as the students are concerned...

I didn't know it was possible to beat up a Safari - which survives for decades in the bottom of my carry-all with only minor scuffs, still looking pretty good. Unlike it's cousin, the Al-Star, which I learned will get dented and the color chipped in a hurry if bounced around in my bag.

First, I make a note to myself that whatever model was damaged that way, any replacement I get will need to be stored and carried more carefully, maybe in a hard shell case.

Then, if the first one still writes well, I demote it to a travel pen that I am not afraid to lose in the hotel, or airport, or wherever.

I tend to agree with OldGriz's opinion of your classmates. If you do replace your pen, I suggest not letting the new one sit around out of your immediate sight and reach. You might keep it on your person and still take the old one with you to leave where your classmates can beat it up if you get distracted.

When a couple of my pens have got scratched and / or dented, I've tended to throw them away and buy again.

Why do you keep your pen behind your back? Doesn't that make it hard to write with?

I keep it in my pocket when watching demonstrations or something similar, but they seem to sneakily take it out and then recklessly throw it around etc.

I don't get it.They actually take your pen out of your pocket? And then throw it around. Do they do this purposely to be mean to you?

Not sure. A lot of the time they take my pen and then mess around with it but don't damage it on purpose. They handle it without care though.

But earlier today, someone actually took it and then threw it on the floor under some table, nib down I presume.

Unless that is your shirt pocket any dings, dents or scratches are on you. If it is your shirt pocket how does anyone get it out without your knowledge?

Your classmates sound like idiots.

I think you have to carry pens that are suitable for the environment you intend to use them in. For example, it sounds like you need to take as cheap a pen as possible to school and use your better ones at home or when the chance of someone stealing/misusing them is reduced.

As for what I do with damage pens. I still have a Parker pen from school. It is beaten to pieces and I'd be embarrassed to use it and I have far better pens now a days due to circumstances. I have no intention though of throwing it away as it does have sentimental value. It lives in its Parker box and I may stumble across it once a year and have a look at it.

Good luck with your collection and don't let others put you off.

It's pretty upsetting that they don't respect what belongs to me so decide to try and trash it.

Sounds like it is time to take this matter to the school administration....

If they are damaging your pen on purpose and not because they don't know how to use one it is harrassment and bullying...

On my side of the pond those offenses will get a student at the minimun detention and depending on the severity of the offense they will be suspended or more...

Around my area, not many people use fountain pens so I'm pretty sure that I won't be taken seriously.

:D :lticaptd: .

Have your mother sew your shirt pocket so it is a pen pocket, it's harder for the bullies to steal it from you.

Yes report it...or punch them in the nose or both but first report it, on paper with the Headmasters signature so you don't get suspended. That will make sure you will be taken serious.

Or take your bullying ... I'd suggest learning to fight. Even if you lose if you get a good punch in on his nose he will think twice. With out warning, nor a word said, you don't want him to get set....A real dirty low uppercut/or grab to start the nose down to your height for a solid punch will do wonders for 'attitude problems'.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

As someone who was bullied pretty badly and lost many (ballpoint) pens, the two things I suggest are:

  1. Front pocket carry or keep the damn thing in your hand. Eyes on the pen :P
  2. Hook a bit of strong/wool through the clip and physically tie it to yourself.

You can spot a writer a mile off, they're the ones meandering in the wrong direction muttering to themselves and almost walking into every second lamppost.

When I was still in school, I didn't carry anything worth more than an Osmiroid 75.

Now, I consider the scars and brassing (and tip wear, at least until the nib wears out completely!) on my "workhorse" Pelikan M200 to be badges of honor: it is a pen that gets used, not collected.

I agree with Old Griz, it is time to take this to the school administration. Regardless whether they will take you "seriously" for using a fountain pen. It is bullying.

Hmm...so sad to hear that. Perhaps adding them together in a box and selling or gifting them would be better than the trash? I don't think I own a pen that's not scratched or dented, and they write just as well.

Umm...Where'm I Goin' ?
