God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind, I will never die.

Is the OP trying to put in a bid for Word of the Year? 'Cause I hate to break it to you, but last year's word was "app" (and, according to a friend of mine, the runner up was "nom"). :roflmho:

It's either that, or an attempt to make me dig out the magnifying glass for my boxed edition 2 volume Compact Oxford English Dictionary

Yeah...go for it, and good luck with that.

Oh, I dunno -- half the time when I look up words online it's to check the spelling and it's sort of amusing to watch the Merriam-Webster site try and guess what word I really mean. But I really like the Compact OED because it gives citations for early usage, which helps when I'm researching stuff (usually name elements for SCA heraldry submissions).

It was a slightly belated Christmas present -- I had gone to lunch with my husband and as we were walking back to the car we passed a used bookstore with it in the window, so he bought it for me on the spot. :cloud9: I know, I know -- I'm a total nerd: I got a dictionary for Christmas and was HAPPY about it.... :roflmho:

I know some people who use the online version of it, but you either have to pay big bucks for a subscription or be affiliated with a library or university. This way it's right here in the living room when I need it without having to log on (although getting those big books out of the slip case is sometimes a pain in the butt).

I prefer paper copies of books. There is just something about turning pages, especially in old books, that I enjoy.

We have a number of old bookshops here in the UK and I can sit for hours just paging through the things. Unfortunately, the really really old ones arre kept under lock and key!!!

Charity shops (Goodwill) also often get given someone's dead relatives books and I find real old stuff there, the worn covers, the leather binding - ahhhhh, too nice!

I think you will find that what GClef brings to this site is unique and original. No dictionary will suffice.

I was crawling a flea market, one day, looking for pens, and I found a compact OED for sale. Mine has the whole thing in one volume. It came with a magnifier. I got it for the price of a couple of crippled pens. But then, I had to get a dictionary stand for it. An then a floor lamp to stand by it. And then make room for it in the library. When I open it up, I can't stop reading it.

Can a calculator understand a cash register?
