Small Pelikan Box

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I purchased a new Pelikan from Europe recently (from a well known dealer). The pen arrived quickly and as described. I was a bit surprised to see the box it arrived in: a tiny, thin cardboard box that was barely bigger than the pen itself. It appears official with a sticker on the side with the correct info. I guess I'm used to the large extravagant Pelikan boxes I've seen in America...so I'm wondering if anyone knew anything about the small box.

Here's a picture of it:

Now I suppose it's time to stop worrying about a box I'll never use and start enjoy the bloody pen!

Cheers,

NM

I received the same box for my M420. I purchased directly from the Pelikan HQ here. I'm fine with it. Unless you are looking for one, you may need to ask the dealer / seller first on the box's availability.

Congrats for the new pen, Enjoy using it.

It is common to have Pelikan pens packed in these small boxes. In fact, the normal production series came in these small boxes by default, which are then packed into the usual G5 or G6 gift boxes. This small box cuts down shipping fee if you don't really need the bigger gift box. :)

Other pens available for sale:

Pelikan : Keep a watchout here, M805 FPs, M400 and M405 FPs,

From the seller's perspective: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/231017-pelikan-m600-from-regina-martini/page__view__findpost__p__2482998

She sent my last purchase (got it just yesterday) in a wooden box, but the pen kinda comes with a black box *cough* ;)

Edit: Oh, and enjoy your new pen

Thanks for the heads up. It's not a huge deal to me as the pen is hardly a collectible...and I got outstanding service from the dealer so no complaints there either.

I've had this size of box from Pelikan as well as the other sizes and frankly I prefer the smaller ones. I really don't see the point in ostentatious presentation as the pens go into their cases and the boxes go the specially-designed dust-gathering shelf. It's a shame th elikes of Conway Stewart can't take a leaf out of some other manufacturer's books, as the saying goes!

I think that ultimately you pay extra for the presentation box and packaging, which explains the reason why a Pelikan from he UK agents for pen is much more expensive than the same pen from Pelikan Germany for example.

This is what the link to the earlier topic states.

It seems that since you pay extra for the fancy packaging, you need to decide whether you want the pen more than the bling of the packaging. I am sure the dealer would sell you the presentation box as an extra.

I think the early Sheaffer and Parker models with their smaller, flatter presentation boxes had the right idea. Much better than the latest of selling them all in plastic blister covering that is great for hanging on display, but not for anything else.

The latest luxury-style packaging from Pelikan is not to my taste. (the fake wooden box that resembles a coffin, with the fake leather pouch, accompanied by a cheap plastic stamp/seal)

If Pelikan wants a serious chique package; it has to be real wood, real leather, no place for fake materials. They better stayed with the old, somewhat clumsy and austere presentation they had for many years; I like that more than trying to catch an air of "Montblanc-chique".

So: small boxes can hold big pens.

Most of the new Pelikans I've purchased from Germany on eBay (martini.de in particular) came in just the sort of box you show. If you want the bigger box more common over here, look for listings that say gift box or one of the Pelikan model numbers for the larger box.

This is saddening. I ordered a pelikan yesterday and now all I can do is hope it does come in a nice box. I like to use the nice boxes to store my pens when I'm not writing with them.

If it's a recent model pen (with the most recent packaging) and not old stock, then you're not going to be missing out on anything.

The new packaging doesn't lend itself to quick and easy pen removal, like the more standard boxes with flip lids. It involves more grappling and pulling.

I once bought a Pelikan M800 with 4 bottles of Edelstein inks from the dealer. The pen was shipped exactly like that, thrown into the same box as the inks,, and it got dented under the weight of the ink bottles. We're talking about 4 big ink bottles that were sitting on the flimsy the paper cardboard box. Seeing the small dent on the body of a new pen when I received it ruined the joy of fountain pens for me. I don't even want to imagine if the package was thrown or handled roughly on its way here, which means that the pen must have gone through a lot of sufferings :( . If your pen comes like that, just hope that it will arrive in one piece, because the machine sometimes destroys packages.

Wow, that's such a sad story. Of all the ways for a pen to get damaged, crushed by ink is one I never considered. The shipper really should have done a better job protecting everything. I'm glad I opted out of ordering any ink with it now. Hopefully, it arrives Friday safe and sound.

I'm also lucky enough to have just ordered the pen on its own. I've quickly gotten over the box and am really enjoying the pen. m800 may well be the best pen I own!

My Pelikan Pharo came in such a box. I got the pen from a fellow FPNer several years ago. Seeing that it was not a very expensive pen (about $ 30 if I remember it correctly), I figured that's okay.

But I'm surprised to hear that even the more expensive pens came in that small box. I have three Pelikans (M205 Demonstrator, Grand Place, and White Tortoise M400) and they all came in a large presentation box.

Here's a few of the Pelikan fountain pen boxes I've accumulated in the last few years. I don't remember which pen came in the box 3rd from the right, but the rest are labeled.

I like the non gift box

It's what a real workhorse pen should come in

The gift box as an option is nice for when the pen is actually a gift

Also, irony, that my 4001st post is about Pelikans

Exactly this. Call me crazy, but when I pay $300+ for a pen, there's certain standards that I expect. Aside from looking nice, it's a place to store/protect the pen.

And yeah, I understand the economics behind it, especially in shipping. I can get over the lack of a pretty box for a workhorse pen. However, as a company, it puts on a bad image for someone buying a pen as a gift or a first time buyer, who might be expecting something more impressive (and yes, you can probably request/pay for a box, but someone might not know this/expect to pay on top of an already expensive item). At the end of the day, FPs are a luxury item and we're paying luxury prices; a box is a small cost in the scheme of things.

From personal experience, I was pretty disappointed in some of the boxes I've received -- and they were the standard boxes, not reduced-sized tubes. I can't imagine how upset I would feel if I got a tube without any sort of warning.
