Noodler's Ink Coral Sea Blue

This ink was exclusive to the Australian market. Thanks to Genius, I was able to acquire a bottle. The ink had been amazing in my fade tests and I wanted to have a bottle of my own. As you can see, when I tried to scrub it off with water, the ink remained but the paper died.

My experience with CSB is that it takes some time to "set", after which it's pretty much impervious, including, as you know from the famous "caboose experiment", lightfastness. OTOH, my experience is with a bottle purchased almost three years back, so it's possible that the formulation has changed. I have had some significant improvement in flow and application from that bottle with about a 30% dilution and the addition of a tiny drop of PhotoFlo (something that I've found has made even recalcitrant inks like Manjiro Nakahama Whaleman's Sepia behave quite well).

Good question !

 

PhotoFlo is a surfactant that has been used in photography developing for decades. In that context, it makes developing agents flow more smoothly off of the negatives so droplets don't stay on the negs and make spots. In the context of inks, it helps the ink flow more smoothly into, through, and off the nib onto paper.

 

I wrote up some notes on this topic here. I've also referenced Sandy's discussions on the topic in my post there. Others contributed to her thread and my thread with some alternatives for PhotoFlo.

 

I've had good results with careful use of PhotoFlo on some rather stubborn inks.

Anyway, in Australia, prices are 2-2.5x higher than what you would expect.

I paid $25 for a bottle 3oz at the only store I believe who carries this ink. It's not cheap.

Quite sometime back, I corresponded briefly with Nathan T. on this subject, and he explained that when he made something an "Exclusive" for a given seller, he couldn't then just go and market it elsewhere. There are items where a given vendor has stopped selling Noodler's that have shifted over to another vendor like the Goulets (e.g., the inks formerly exclusive to Jetpens), but if it's still an active item with a vendor (e.g., Legal Lapis with Pendemonium), one can't fault Nathan T. for being a man of his word...

In Sydney it has an eternal ink price of around $38 for 3oz/90mls(compared to $23-$25 for regular Noodler's) in the two shops in the city that sell it.

Fair question. Insofar as I could see online, most Noodler's "standard" inks made it Down-Under. However, inks like Pendemonium's Legal Lapis do not seem to have translated there, nor do U.K. "Exclusives" like Prime of the Commons make it there.
