A True Classic. A Mini-Review Of My New Montblanc Classic!

My new Montblanc Classic came in the mail today and I inked it with Montblanc Mystery Black ink.

The Montblanc Classic is a C/C filling mechanism pen that came to me with a Montblanc converter. The pen is the standard Montblanc black with gold trim. The pen has no serial number because it was made prior to 1991 and it has the words Montblanc and W Germany etched around the cap band. The pen came with it's original box too which was also stamped W. Germany.

I purchased the pen off eBay for $99 with free shipping which I thought was a great deal. The seller described the pen as a Montblanc Generation and it was not until the auction ended and I took a better look at the pictures that I realized the pen was actually a Montblanc Classic which was manufactured from 1979-1989. The retro 60s design has been used by Montblanc in the 1990s/2000s Generations pens, the 320 from the 1970s and originally in the 32 and 34 from the 1960s.

The nib is a 14kt monotone, semi-hooded and it has no air hole unlike the Meisterstuck series nibs. The nib is decorated plainly with just the Montblanc star in a circle. The nib size sticker was missing but I believe it is a size medium and it writes a true medium width in the line it produces.

The body of the pen is quite simple without the many gold plated rings of the Meisterstuck series and the cap band is tapered at the end which adds to the flow of the simplistic, modernistic design.

The pen features two Montblanc white star emblems. One large star on the top of the cap and a tiny one on the bottom of the barrel. The clip is very simple without much sculpting in the design. The pen is flat on the top and bottom unlike the rounded ends of the Meisterstuck series.

One of the unique features of this pen is the ink window. Ink windows in my experience are not typically found on C/C filling pens and there is not one present on my C/C Montblanc 144. The ink window is clear and features multiple squares of clear plastic almost like a row of window panes.

The black material the pen is made out of does not seem to be as high quality as the "precious resin" used in the Meisterstuck series. The black material is lighter in weight than precious resin, has more of a dulled shine to it and feels a little cheaper and more plastic-like.

The pens writes very smooth. I used standard lined Rhodia paper for the writing sample. It wrote right out of the box without me needing to flush out the nib. However, the semi-hooded nib does not have the flex that I have read the 1980s Meisterstuck nibs have but this is not necessarily a bad thing. It is a smooth writer as I wrote earlier and has a little bit of spring and feedback when pressed. The line is a true and full medium and it doesn't write too wet and not at all dry; just right. Overall I'm very pleased with my new Montblanc Classic fountain pen.

Nice review and congratulations on the pen.

I like to MB emblem on the butt of the pen. I've always wondered why more pens do not have some sort of design there, rather than just being a boring one colour.

Thanks for the great review of a great pen. I have the 320, which as you wrote is an earlier incarnation of the Classic. It has a semi-flex fine nib. Great writing pen ... I take it everywhere!

That's one of my favorite things about the Classic. The bottom star emblem was also featured on the earlier incarnations of the pen like the 320 and 34, 32.

I love the shape of these pens. It was a body style that Montblanc produced on and off for over 40 years. I'd love to see MB come out with a similarly shaped pen but with a fresh, modern twist on the design.
