10 Vintage Waterman Pens With Remarkable Nibs

Zed

Recommended Posts

All the pens in this batch have been recently restored and so they are fully functional as well as clean and shiny.

The first pen is a cute little Canadian made Waterman #52 ½ V with the correct Canadian Waterman #2 nib.

The pen is made of red ripple (I just noticed that I made a mistake in the hand written description) hard

rubber and as is typical with vest pocket pens it sports a cap ring rather than a cap clip. The pen is in

nice condition: it has a nice uniform colour, fully readable imprints and almost no brassing on the gold filled parts.

The nib the pen comes with is a nice extra fine and extra flexible affair. A nice nib for point style writing and drawing.

This pen is 11 cm long closed and 14 cm posted.

The second pen is user grade US made Waterman #52 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. The pen is made of red ripple

hard rubber and as is typical example of this model. Even though the imprints are only half readable and the gold

filled parts somewhat brassed the pen’s colour is still very vibrant. As whole the pen is in very good condition.

The nib the pen comes with is a nice extra fine and extra flexible affair – capable of producing pretty broad swells.

The nib is smooth enough to be used as an expressive writer – it is perhaps an exaggeration to claim that it could

be an everyday writer – but it is perfectly capable of producing attractive copperplate.

This pen is 13.6 cm long closed and 16.8 cm posted.

The third pen is another US made Waterman #52 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. The pen is also made of red

ripple hard rubber and as is a less common example of the pen as it has a bandless cap. The pen is in nice condition;

its colour is only slightly faded, the imprints still readable and the gold filled parts almost free of brassing.

The long tined nib the pen comes with is a nice wet extra fine and extra extra flexible affair. Just as the previous

nib it is can be used as an expressive writer but due to its increased flexibility it is especially suitable for

practicing copperplate and drawing.

The forth pen is an elegant Waterman #14 with the correct Waterman #4 nib and a fancy cap band that is only

very lightly brassed at the high points. The pen is made of smooth black hard rubber which is only lightly faded

and so retains nice uniform colour. Unfortunately the imprint is very weak and the number 14 on the bottom of

the pen is gone completely – so I only assume that this is Waterman #14.

The pen is an eyedropper-filler and so it can be easily cleaned even if you decide to use various eternal inks.

The nib is spectacular long tined, extra flexible, needlepoint affair. It is an ideal nib for copperplate

style of writing as the nib is very springy allowing for very precise transitions between swells and hairlines.

The fifth pen is an early and hard to find Waterman #15 VS (which stands of Vest pocket Safety) with the correct

Waterman #5 nib. It is a fat pen with a fat griping section though as a vest pocket model it is some 2 inches

shorter than the standard version (but still slightly longer than the pens listed here as numbers seven to ten).

The chasing and imprints on the pen are almost perfect and the bottom imprint retains some amount of red wax.

The blackness of the hard rubber is almost perfect too.

As the pen is a safety it is an eyedropper-filler. This pen can be easily cleaned as the whole barrel can be

unscrewed and the whole inside of the pen removed. It can therefore take some of the less fountain pen friendly

inks that would clog other pens.

The nib is yet another wet noodle. It is even more flexible and capable of even more dramatic effects than the previous nib.

The pen comes with the original box and a little Waterman catalogue with filling instructions – both in fair condition.

This pen is 12.2 cm long closed and 15.6 cm posted.

The sixth pen is an early Waterman #14 S (stands for Safety) with the correct Waterman #4 nib. Just like the previous

pen it is made of chased black hard rubber though the chasing and imprints are rather worn and the colour slightly faded.

The nib the pen comes with is yet another wet noodle and perhaps the best nib of this batch. Quite a treat!

This pen also comes also with the original box and a little Waterman catalogue with filling instructions – both in nice condition.

This pen is 12.8 cm long closed and 16 cm posted.

The seventh pen is a near mint Waterman #42 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. Just like the previous pen it

is made of chased black hard. The chasing and imprints are in excellent condition and the colour shows only slight fading.

The nib is a nice extra fine and extra extra flexible affair. It is another superb calligraphic nib that is somewhat

easier to control than the wet noodles in this batch.

This pen is 12 cm long closed and 15.2 cm posted.

The eighth pen is a user grade Waterman #42 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. Just like the previous pen

it is made of chased black hard rubber. Unfortunately, the chasing is almost completely gone and the imprint

is very weak but it is nevertheless still nicely black and shiny.

The nib the pen comes with is perhaps the most flexible of the whole batch. This flexibility as well as appropriate

wetness was achieved by customisation of an ordinary flexible Waterman #2 nib. The nib is now capable of producing

incredibly dramatic copperplate effects as it is capable of very broad swells and fine hairlines. The nib is

great fun to use for practicing copperplate but it is not for beginners as it requires delicate hand!

The ninth pen is another user grade Waterman #42 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. This is somewhat later

model (made some time after during 1930’s) as the cap threads are no longer raised but level with the body.

This makes the pen somewhat more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time. Perhaps that is why the

imprint is very weak and the colour somewhat faded.

This pen comes with is a nice extra fine and extra flexible nib. It is another nib that was customised by

me so that it that could be used for expressive writing as well as for practicing pointed style scripts: a versatile nib.

The tenth pen is a nice Waterman #42 with the correct Waterman #2 nib. This pen is again made of chased black

hard rubber. The chasing and imprints are still in very nice condition and the colour shows only slight fading.

What is more the pen is equipped with a very useful removable cap clip.

The nib this pen comes with is perhaps my favourite of this batch. It feels very easy to control even though

it is capable of very dramatic copperplate effects with pressure...

The pens no 1,2,3,8,9 and 10 are now sold and pens no 4 and 5 are now on hold.

So who will go for the remaining pen no 6 and 7?

Thanks!

Thanks again for the flattery - but the writing is rather shakier then my usual shaky standard - still I do not complain when people like my penmanship attempts...

Old school sales. Fantastic. I love it.

Present in a manner that creates need and desire, reinforce with facts.

As timeless as the pens you are selling.

Thank-you

I love pen #4, it is gorgeous, too bad it has been sold :crybaby: Hope I'll be able to find a pen with the same design and same nib one day!
