Rotring Brilliant Ink – Ultramarine

I don’t know if this is still available, I bought two NOS 30ml bottles on eBay. The box says Made in Germany. I assume that Rotring did not make its own ink, but I have no knowledge to suggest otherwise.

When I used it, I was reminded of another blue, but I really cannot place it. I tried swabs of most of my blues but could not find a match.

It has slightly more purple tinge than Aurora Blue or Diamine Imperial Blue, in fact it is slightly more purple than any of my blues. However, it does not become purple. My wife called it a bluey purple. When it dries there is a very slight smoky texture to the colour.

In the attached image I tried to alter the colour balance so it would look more like it does on paper. It is still not quite right. It is very slightly more purple than it appears here.

I'd heard about this ink from some old reviews on another site, and looked for it when I was last in Germany, but couldn't find any. I think it was discontinued and you may have found some NOS here, but I may be wrong. Anyway, it's nice to see a sample of it. It might be worth comparing it against PR Tanzanite, which is also on the blue/purple borderline.

AFAIK the only available ink is the Artpen in cartridges (black, royal blue and brown). There is of course the pigmented ink for technical drawing but I wouldn't use that in FPs.

If anyone is still looking for this ink, Pilotfishpens, a UK ebay seller has NOS stocks. I've just bought two 30ml bottles for less than $7 American, £4 English. Outremer England will probably incur some postage, but for Brits its post free and a big purply blue bargain.

Hope this helps.

I might be old, but at least I got to see all the best Bands.

Just to add -- still available from Pilotfish, same great price. I now have my new clipless Ranga model 3 in blue/red/yellow ebonite (the blue and red mix in some swirls to give a bluey-purple effect), with a broad Knox nib from a Bulow X530 Mondlicht, filled to the brim with bluey-purple goodness!
