Actually NO! I prefer a 4x6 notebook with the narrower lines. Do NOT be dismayed by the large size. It balances beautifully.

Go back and look - there are IF users among the nib choices.

I can't write on an 8x11 notebook with fat lines unless there's nothing else in the house. :bonk:

It sounds like smk has his IF working nicely now. And maybe someday you'll get a chance to put up a scan of some of your writing with the IB

I'm really liking the variation of the stubs and italics I have so far, but when I try to write in my small journals that only have 6cm line spacing, letters are loosing their definition and running together with the thicker line. Even a cm difference (going from the 6cm small to 7cm large Webbie or A5 sized lined Rhodia, for instance) makes a big difference though. To me, the "large" Webbie (5.5 X 8.25) or A5 sized Clairfontaine clothbound notebook (with 8cm lines) aren't that big, but still are bigger than I'm used to (the small Webbie being only 3.5 X 5.5, and small Moleskine even a tad smaller). I think your 4X6 are right in between -- do you know what the line spacing is on them?

So, both Salman and I had nibs that wouldn't write properly without adjustment. Mine did need further adjustment after the ink change.

[Thanks for the hint, Truffle Finder. The metal of the Macbook is another good surface and the turquoise stain is rather fetching!]

Two nibs out of ten pens, then, have been imperfect: one IB and one IF

Chris, I don't want to use mine as an ED, and I shouldn't have to: Conway Stewart should be providing us with pens that work as they are designed to work.

Sorry for this grumpy post.

I really did appreciate the help from Henry and Chris in trying to solve the problem. I just don't think that Salman and I should have had problems to begin with.

Can you imagine what is it like to finally receive this much awaited pen and feel the disappointment of it not being a reliable writer. ?

And it was also a bit disappointing that it is not a sharp Italic, either.

BUT, it is BEAUTIFL and I adore the SOL pen .

Schadow

I'm not sure, but Brian Goulet has the measurements on his site somewhere and Biffybeans posted a comparison on the Rhodia Drive blog, I think. They're definitely narrower than the larger notebooks. I think what we call college ruled on the notbook paper? Lovely paper and the size is small enough there's no big edges to fall off of. I tried an old ruler and it's somewhere between 6 & 7.

Bet there's a review somewhere here on the board. :hmm1:

Great -- thanks -- I should be able to find the line spacing info; I just wasn't sure exactly which journal/notebook you were using -- is it the Clairfontaine you mentioned earlier or another brand, and do you know which version (Brian's online store is a virtual candy store, with so many choices! :vbg: )?

Schadow, look at the Clairefontaine staple bounds first and move out from there.

I use the Quo Vadis Habanas and Rhodia Webnotebooks for my conferences for idiot proof notetaking, but I think the lines on those are wider.

Chris, Thanks for posting Neal's photos. Absolutely incredible! Awesome! I want to plunge my hand in that case and fondle pens.

No hand plunging I'm afraid, we don't tolerate that here in England!

But if you come over to the London Pen Show next year Henry promises you can have a private viewing anytime!

Thanks, GP -- am going to pick up one of their small or middle-size pads my next order with Brian (I just watched his video on the classic staple bounds, and in it he says all but the large are 7mm spacing, with the large being 8mm, so they should be nice comfortable spacing).

Regarding the SOL 2nd run waiting list, I sent a message last week to Henry via the contact form on his site (about getting on the list, with a few questions for him); haven't heard back yet but I know he's been busy with the pen show last weekend.

Hi Schadowrider!

Henry is now at the Goldsmith's Hall Exhibition all this week - so he is indeed busy - but he will, I'm sure get back to you very quickly.

You will love the Spirit of Life pen if you get one!!!

What GP said! Lovely!

Chris: was your sample posted earlier in the thread also with the IF, or was that with your IM?

I have to add my "AWESOME" to everybody elses - Salman, that is awesome! :notworthy1:

Shadowrider - my sample and poor penmanship was using the fine CI nib and Momiji ink by Iroshizuku. I wonder what Salman used for his?
