Which makers still make their own nibs.

So who still makes their own nibs?

IIRC Pelikan was bringing the process back in house.

Aurora still does I believe.

I think ST Dupont still does.

How about the Japanese companies?

My question, of course, will be heretical: why does it matter? With Schmidt selling Bock and JoWo nibs, and Bock selling directly to pen makers as well, one could argue that you'll get a better nib at a lower pen cost from a company that doesn't make their own, at least until you get into fairly rarefied (for my budget -- above, say, $200) price ranges.

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Because knowledge is good.

And it is not about what is better or worse, but simply who makes their own nibs.

MontBlanc Starwalker Cool Blue

MontBlanc 144

What about Visconti?

The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.

Pelikan moved almost all nib production back in-house. Here is the thread.

It does raise the question of how much the writing experience, focusing on the nib, will change between different pen companies that use the same nib maker.

That can be quite different, even when all made by the same company. Generally the bigger companies will order a nib that is specific to what they need, the thickness may vary, the profile, the shapes of shoulders, tines, base, the curvature, the tipping. These are all things that could be specified in the OEM agreement.

In addition, the feed as well as the section play a big part in how a pen writes, so those too will be considerations.

Well OMAS is outsourcing even their own nibs now. And both Dunhill and Cartier are part of the Richemont Group now.
