Noodler's Black (review)

In my first shipment of Noodler's Ink there was also the most famous Noodler's Black. I never wrote with black ink in my little Moleskine black-books. My first impression of this ink was "wooow this is smooth, and what a great flow". It writes just different with this ink. More reviews on my own blog.

Black ink really matches the somehow off-white pages of the Moleskine paper. It gives a nice classy impression. In my work I use the squared large notebook. For journaling I use the large ruled Moleskine.

In the written review:

"Saturday, july 4th, 2009

I filled my Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 (fine), with Noodler's Black.

The ink is the most praised ink on the internet. I was very curious how it would do on this Moleskine paper. The ink is black and I mean very black! I love it!

My Montblanc 149 is a wet-writer but Noodler's Black does not show any feathering or bleedtrough. The ink takes about 20 seconds to completely dry.

Noodler's Black will be my number one in this pen for daily use, in combination with Moleskine paper.

If anyone tell's you Moleskine paper sucks and you are afraid to use it........ well let me tell you their are great combinations of pen and ink that make great combinations to use this wonderful black book. Yes people are right when they are saying Moleskine paper is not good with all foutainpen-inks. It takes time to find right combinations.

In the picture below you can see no bleedtrough at all.

I now can understand all the praise this ink is giving. It writes very smooth. I also tested it in a Lamy Safari (fine) and Sailor 911 (medium). With this pens also their was no bleedtrough and the ink behaved like a wish. Noodler's Black in my number one ink in my Montblanc Meisterstuck 149.

I was an immediate and huge fan of Noodler's Old Manhattan Blackety-Black Black, and yesterday, I received my Swisher Pens shipment of inks which included Noodler's Black, and I, too, am completely won over by this ink. I have it in a Sheaffer's Flat-Top (my first one) and in a Bexley Simplicity.

This black is VERY BLACK, and while it isn't bulletproof, it is said to be waterproof, particularly if several days have passed, allowing for the ink to soak in (I suppose).

Thanks for the review!

And Noddler's Black is the bulletproof, me humbly thinks.... :)

Is it? Can Noodler's be any more confusing?! *Laughs*

Well, that's great if it is. I'd settle for waterproof, but... bulletproof goes to eleven.

Thanks, Ondina!

Yes, it is bulletproof, at least in the sense most of the ink will remain until the paper gives out.

Noodlers Bulletproof black is the best ink ever.

  • non-feathering
  • non-bleeding
  • hyper-black
  • washes easily off of skin
  • bulletproof
  • neither a gusher nor clogging

I have a bottle and hadn't inked any pens up in some time - I'm just a fan of blue and purplish inks these days. I'd been struggling with a Uniball 207 as my bulletproof ink and am not thrilled with the performance of the refills, so I decided to load up my Pilot Capless just to have one pen with bulletproof ink in it and it IS a nicely behaved ink and certainly Spinal Tap worthy ("none more black")... With a choice like this unless there is a carbon involved I am running out of reasons to keep a ballpoint/rollerball handy at all...

A pen a day keeps the doctor away...

Hi Llyod ! How is Noodler's Bulletproof black called ? (Manhattan ? Heart of darkness ? )

Oh yeah, Noodler's Black is the bulletproof ink -- the prototypical, paradigm-changing, Mother of All Bulletproof Inks.

Did I mention it's bulletproof?

Good stuff.

Old Manhattan & Heat of Darkness came after this ink. They have slightly different characteristics: possibly darker but slightly more feathering. This ink is just called Noodler's Bulletproof Black.

The Noodler's Bulletproof Black is just labeled Noodler's Black. It is the same price as the regular Noodler's ink but you get the "bulletproof" qualities without the higher price tag. There are several other "bulletproof" colors of Noodler's ink but they all tend to cost more most are exclusive to one dealer or another. Someone mentioned that you can't mix the "Bulletproof" inks with other inks and maintain the bulletproof qualities. The trick is, only mix them with regular Noodler's inks (V-mail, Russian, British, Bay State and several others are not included in the regular line) and they will maintain a percentage of the bulletproof qualities. This is how the Noodler's "Swishmix" inks were made. The Swishmix inks are a mixture of about 75-85 percent bulletproof mixed with our Noodler's Fast Drying "Swisher" inks. Should the "Swisher" part be removed by water, bleach, UV or whatever, the remaining bulletproof ink remains. The reason I asked Nathan to make the "Swishmix" inks was for use on certain types of paper that full strength bulletproof inks seemed to take a long time to dry. What this did was add an additional amount of surfactant to the Bulletproof ink allowing it to dry somewhat faster on several types of paper. My personal favorite of the Swishmix ink is the Tahitian Pearl (Blue/Black) followed by Nile Ebony . If you are going to be at the Miami, D.C. or NY Pen show stop by my table and give this ink a try (I always have one or two pens loaded with it and Noodler's Borealis Black).

BTW, I just did a search for the Noodler's Swishmix inks and came across a very interesting site owned by Kate Granger and it has some very interesting scans and data about different types of ink. Thought some may want to take a look:

Bought a bottle of Noodler's Black at Bromfeld's when I was visiting Boston last week -- as well .

Filled the Blue Esterbrook L J (1555) I had found in an antique shop in Dennis (Cape Cod) a few days earlier. Wrote in my Moleskine Notebook. I was impressed. The combination was great. I was enchanted by both the pen and the ink.

A few days later, when I came back home, I filled an English Parker 51 I hadn't inked for a while. Brought it at work. Again, I was impressed. Writes real well in my less than fountain-pen friendly journals that are standard at my work place.

Can't wait to try it with other combinations of pens and papers.

I am a really happy customer,

I visited the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York City this week and they display Noodlers Manhatten black-black as an exclusive ink made for them by Noodlers and sold only by their store. The Noodler's black in this review is, I think, another black produced by Noodlers.

It is a little confusing.

This review got me motivated to finally try the bottle I've had. I was using Polar Black and Heart of Darkness for the longest time. I've used many other blacks such as Aurora and Platinum Carbon Black on my quest for the perfect black. I put Noodler's Black into a cheap pen and it writes great, super black and well flowing, no feathering.

Even though Platinum Carbon Black and Heart of Darkness come close:

The perfect black for me was Noodler's Black all along.

It's rich and exactly what I wanted in a black ink.

How would you describe the difference between Noodler's Black and Heart of Darkness?

I am right with you on this. It is so well behaved and on top of all of that bulletproof? I use it for nearly everything.

I liked it immediately, first test. I didn't know it was bulletproof, thought it was only waterproof, which was fine with me. Bulletproof is a bonus!
