I'm interested in a Fine nib - but if that's not doable, I'd consider the EF nib; but I can't find pricing anywhere -

FPN LE Etruria Azurite pens with Vermeil Trim and 18K duotone nib (1 * EF, 1 * 52 degree) (update 2011-10-12)

 

Could you let me know the price on this pen, and whether a Fine duotone nib - either 14 k or 18 k is available that would fit?

When do we expect these pens will arrive in the US?

Shipping from 2011-11-15, I guess a little later.

 

We do have a conference call with Stipula early this upcoming week, and expect to get more and more detailed info.

Apparently Stipula had been economic with the stock, so they could turn out a few more pens.

My question now is: will they hold enough material in stock for repairs (hopefully never needed)?

I have had it happen to me that a cap broke after an unlucky incident, and I was happy to be able to get a new cap in the same color.

Hi Joe,

 

No, they will not be. As indicated amongst others in the FPN LE Pens forum, there is a delay, of approximately 2 weeks, caused by a malfunctioning milling lathe (1 of 3) earlier this month. It is fixed now, and manucaturing is happening right now, with manufacturing estimated to be finished on November 15, after which the pens wil be shipped straightaway.

 

Tomorrow evening, Monday October 31, the shipping list will be sent to Stipula.

I'm new to this. What is the significance of the F, M and 1.1 for the nibs? Are any of them artist's nibs?

Hi, Steve -

 

F and M are standard nibs (Fine and Medium, respectively). It really depends on the maker how fine those are, but most people find they have a preference for one or the other for everyday writing. B would be the 3rd typical choice (only in the 18K right now), which is Bold, which some people like as a signature pen or for everyday writing if they like writing large. EF (also in the 18K) is Extra Fine, one step smaller than fine. I personally think you have to have a light touch to use an EF - I tend to rip paper with one

 

Then there are the italic nibs, 0.9mm and 1.1mm wide. Those are somewhat like calligraphy nibs - wider than they are tall - so they have not a round tip but a horizontal line. IMHO you can barely tell the difference between writing with a medium nib and an 0.9mm nib - perhaps you have to be a touch more careful how you rotate the pen, but it just adds a bit of visual interest to your writing. Again IMHO, 1.1mm does start to look more like you're writing with a calligraphy pen, but it's still a lot narrower than a true calligraphy pen (at least the default Sheaffer ones you'd buy in the art store). You can search for some handwriting samples on this site for italic nibs and see some samples.

 

Then there's one more available in the 18K called 52 degree. This is for lefties, and is slanted slightly in the opposite direction to make it easier to keep the pen on the paper. I know very little about these, not being a lefty myself. I've never seen a size like F, M, B with the size "52 deg", so I'm guessing it's a bit more of an italic nib (where tip slant would really matter), but that's a complete guess on my part.

Actually, owning several calligraphy sets, and more than one complete set of all Stipula nibs (there used to be 10 different nib sizes) the only difference is that the italic nibs are generally a little thicker than non-tipped calligraphy units, which means that horizontal vs vertical line widths are slightly less pronounced.

 

However. 1.1 italic nibs are really calligraphic nibs (3.1 ratio), and indeed 0.9 italics, with a 2.6 ratio of horizontal vs vertical line width, are still calligraphic by nature, but can be written with fairly quickly. Effectively, horizontal lines with one of these pens are F to EF, while with a non-tipped calligraphic pens this is EF to EEF. Depending on how far one turns a pen to the left or right when writing, the calligraphic effect may indeed be diminished.

 

52 degree nibs are actually very wide brush type nibs, also called zoom nibs, widest at 52 degrees angle to the paper, and narrower when changing the angle. These are very popular in countries where scripting and calligraphy is often done with brushes, such as Japan.

 

For most "westerners", a 52 degree nib is comparable to a 2B or 3B (very broad) nib, with slight variation in thickness of lettering when writing.

Most modern nibs are not flexible, and even those that are made to be flexible, are not the same as vintage flex nibs. I am assuming here that you mean flex nibs as used for Spencerian calligraphy.

 

Having said all this, the large Stipula nibs on the Etrurias are springy, with a quality of spring that I have not been able to find in any other nibs. It makes for very comfortable (and pleasurable) writing, with great and pleasant feedback.

 

The Stipula titanium nibs, as used, f.e., in the Modello-T, are very flexible however, and write like EFs to Bs or maybe even 2Bs with a little pressure, so in that regard they are flex nibs. Their flex is different than the flex of old fashioned flex nibs, as the material used flexes even easier.

OK. After looking at the post for newbies on flex nibs with perfect handwriting samples, I realized that a post about nib sizes should really include samples, and I'm not in a position to provide those right now. Anyone want to tackle that? Maybe I should post this request there...

Actually, on October 30 there were 6 left, now there are indeed 4 left .
