Hello, has anyone seen a small Waterman Red Ripple 51v. I've seen 52s and others, but never 51s. Thanks in advance for the info. Very small & tiny nib. Pls see pics.

Odd model, no doubt some info out there somewhere though i don't see it in the couple catalogs i have handy.

I own a nice one. Number 1 Waterman nib not so common either. All the ones i've seen are nickel trim/Bandless. Dunno if there are any gold-filled band 18151 V pens out there, though that trim config is not uncommon in other Ripple sizes.

Here is my 51V montaged with someone else's 58

I have one also.

Interestingly, the nib, which ought to be a Nº 1, has no number. So much for the Standard Numbering System...

Well if Richard has one, then i guess i gotta get rid of mine. Any pen good enough for Richard... :hmm1:

Seriously, though, now i gotta go back and look and see if mine actually has a nib size marked on the nib.

Hello David,

Thanx for the info and pics. It is indeed an odd pen. I went through a couple of catalogues myself and couldn't find it. My other question would be, is it a rare animal? if it is how much would be the approximate value for a "rare" Waterman? I know you're much more knowledgeable than I and I'd appreciate any more info about it.

In advance Thank You.

Armand

Keep in mind that pricing is a vague and evil beast in pendom. Has "absolute" and "relative" components. Has great dependence on grading (if done right). Has large potential retail/wholesale spread and even that is dependent on venue. (ebay 1 week price might be different from website 1 year price).

The pen is well more scarce than many ripples. But scarcity and cachet are not the same thing.

Certainly i see fewer 51V's than 52 1/2 V, 52V, 52, 54, 56 and probably even 58, though of course since big pens tend to pull in impressive bucks, this scarcity does not translate directly into relative value.

IMHO, at retail level, and in similar condition, the 51V outprices the 52's, and maybe 54.

Retail for a superb pen might float in the $250-350 range. But, not a quick sale, generally. Harder to sell most small pens vs lare pens. Might make this an unfair comparo then, since for "all else being equal" i s'pose one should say, "what is sale price if expect to sell in same time frame as some other pen". I do not know how to control for that.

As condition weakens- oxidation of HR, wear/brassing to metal, wear to imprints, price can drop substantially.

And on top of all that, wholesale probably is about 1/2 price of retail, though boards such as FPN do allow for some gray zone pricing.

regards

Gee Thanx a million David,

I knew more or less that this ripple is quite scarce, therefore more valuable, but now I know it is, considering your expertise, I'm more than satisfied. One of these days I'll put it for sale or perhaps I'd keep it for my own collection, I like it very much even though it has a little wear on the level, and also some stain by the section. I don't think the timy (and flexible) nib has a number in it. I wouldn't want to pull it, fearing that I'd do some harm.

Again, Thanx very much.

Armand
