Rotring 600 cap failure

Hi folks,

One of my poor Rotring 600's has suffered an injury to the cap. It's a newer style 600 and the clutch ring (is that the term? the thing inside the cap that is gripped by the two little clips on the section) has come loose. It cannot see any way to reinstall it firmly enough to stay there when I uncap the pen.

Anyone got any ideas where a replacement cap could be found? Complicating matters is that this is a "gold series" pen, so the cap has some gold trim at the top, which seems to be less common. If anyone has a suitable replacement cap from a dead 600 (no idea how you would kill a 600. Dynamite, perhaps?) then I'd love to take it off their hands. Or any ideas as to how to proceed with a repair for what now looks to have become a desk pen?

Hi, I am new to this site and not too competent however I can suggest phoning: 01273-632592 or 01273-513233 this is Sanford UK which is based in Newhaven and they conduct repairs on Rotring (and Parker) pens. I like Rotring pens too !

Hi Theo,

That's a good idea, and I did try them by email and was told that they had no parts for this series any more. Because it's discontinued there's nothing more they can do, they say.

Well, I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled. Photographs I have seen of the roller ball version looks identical, I wonder if they really are the same? It would be another possible source if they were.

I have the new style Rotring 600 Fountain and Rollerball. Unfortunately, the FP is out getting the nib ground. I am expecting it back after the 28th of this month.

PM me after that and I will see if the caps are interchangeable.

Somehow I recall this coming up before and it was determined that the rollerball and fountain pen caps are not compatible, due to a different shape of the plastic cone inside it. But I could be wrong. Fortunately I own both pens and will check when I get home tonight.

The cap clutch has 6 prongs to it (one for each side of the hexagon shape). The only way to extract it is to use a clutch removal tool. Any pen repair specialist would have one of those. They'd remove the clutch and then reshape it so that it fits snug in the cap once again. It would be interesting to hear of any testimonies about this happening. I have several 600's and use a rollerball for heavy duty scrawling... cap has gone off and on many times with no sign of getting loose. I wonder... did you ever accidentally try to force the cap on improperly?

Thanks for all your help and guidance, guys - I'm assuming that I cannot use the rollerball cap for now, but if that can be confirmed it would be great. Perhaps a repair specialist is the right thing. I'll certainly investigate if I cannot get any further on my own.

I don't recall using any more force than I usually do (which is not much) when capping the pen. I only got this one recently, as NOS, and it was fine for a little while. The very satisfying "click" when capping the pen suggested a mechanism that wouldn't need much force to work. The last time I capped it I put it down on the desk and a few minutes later the cap popped off, as the spring loading mechanism in the cap overcame whatever was holding the ring in place! The little ring was still on the section of the pen (instead of inside the cap where it should be).

You mention that the clutch has six prongs. This is interesting. The ring that came free has no prongs on it at all! Looking within the cap I can that there are six lines within the cap that are the same colour as the ring. I assumed that they were just discolouration from the ring being in contact with the cap, but could it be that they were actually holding the ring in place? Hmm...

Any news since last year ? I have a problem too.

I suppose the ring is just pushed by force during assembly… I'd just try to put it back in place with a small amount of epoxy glue. The difficulty would be to place it precisely at the correct depth, but if you have other similar pens you can probably measure that or make a jig.

In my case, it's one of the two springy square pegs on the pen which broke. It's still in there but it's clearly sheared on one side and I could fold it out of the pen with a little fingernail teasing (see pictures). Anyone knows how that part of the pen disassembles ? I suppose I could to pull on the quill and remove it but will that be enough ?

Looking for a Rotring 600 XF nib (or complete pen).

Spares for sale/exchange: a couple fine nib Rotring 600s (black new models, unused).

I noticed that I have exactly the same problem with my Lava after about 9 months of use. It just seemed to appear one day, so I have no idea how this might have happened. Is there any fix for this problem? The pen still writes well, and the cap stays on, but the sheared peg sits right where I put my thumb, so it's more noticeable.

same thing happened to me - a design flaw. I lost the cap, then discarded the pen. Problem solved

I recently diassembled the grip section from a rollerball. With the aid of a heat gun I was able with some difficulty to unscrew the top part holding the sprung cap retaining nibs - see photo.
