What pokemons would be used and how do you predict the market reaction to be? I think an articuno maki-e would be interesting.

Bellsprout/ Weepingbell for the natural appeal. Probably starters most likely, and not beyond gen 1. I would pick up a Bulbasaur in a heartbeat.

Smeargle is another close contender.

Some of the coolest carved jade I've seen was Star Wars Lego characters...

Traditionalists will either shake their heads in disgust or have an aneurysm, but I'd bet there'd be sales enough to justify the project.

So many restoration projects...

True..many new things today would also likely be traditions tomorrow.

Platinum has a series of Star Wars pens. They also produced some Pokemon models too. Both are sort of limit editions. The Star Wars pens were for Disney.

I remember a few years ago someone posted a picture of a "Hello Kitty" pen (I think it was made by Sailor). It was actually a fairly attractive pink (not a bubblegum pink, or an overly "girly" pink). But well, it was going for something like $300 US on eBay at the time. And said "Hello Kitty" on it.... :o

Yikes! Is that pen barrel actually *square*?

I actually considered some of the Cross Star Wars pens, until I saw them in person. But I really can't see someone who does that sort of craftsmanship agreeing to do some sort of anime or manga maki-e pen unless it was a custom job -- and I would think the price tag for that would be extremely high -- probably so high as to not make it worth it to the customer.

Looks a bit like a gold-plated Nettuno Baracuda (another square pen)

I do remember someone did this before and speaking of such there were many x-over with Pilot ; Platinum ; Sailor and others doing Maki-e with all kind of branding

P.S. the Hello Kitty pen is actually pretty nicely done

Oh, it was definitely a very attractive looking pen. Just way too pricy. And, well, Hello Kitty.... :o

Pokemon has huge recognition among elementary school kids, it would be a great way to engage kids in writing and in pens. I definitely would've saved up my allowance for a Pokemon pen. Thinking of all the dumb things the 4th grade version of me would do for a paper (Pokemon) card.

  • 2 weeks later...

You know, I could actually seeing myself going for a Ghost in the Shell design... assuming of course that the price was right (i.e., WAY less than that Hello Kitty pen was going for). And, well, of course, not urushi... :(
