Carbon Composite Mb139 "gf" Replica

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Ive just finished a Carbon Composite “FG" Montblanc 139 replica, attached some pictures
Given the inherent machining problems of this material, this will surely remain a unique prototype.
The dust problems machining this material coupled to the fast wear of the cutting tools made me decide so
It took me over 3 hours to clean my lathe which was covered with a layer of fine carbon powder, what a mess...
The telescopic filler is originating from a MB144, the rings, clip and cap top logo are made from solid silver.
Unfortunately I can’t perfectly catch the pattern structure of the material on the pictures ,it looks nicer in reality .
Best regards,
Francis

If you wanted to reproduce this pen, would it not be possible to layer a former for each part with a single layer of carbon fibre cloth and then apply a few layers of clear epoxy resin to give it meat and then machine that to give the pen its final shape and finish that can then be polished to a high gloss finish?

As a result, you wouldn't have to deal with the carbon dust or the thermal problems with your cutting head.

Very nice sir. The piston trim ring is a nice touch to break up the black.

As I've written here before, MB really ought to hire you to revamp the company's product line. Every pen you've made is more elegant and beautiful than just about everything in the current line. This one is an outstanding blend of "space age" material and simple, unadorned, timeless design. Congratulations on another stunning piece of craftsmanship!!

As always, your workmanship and creativity is awe inspiring. The silver and carbon colour complement each other very well. The long ink window is beautiful. It all goes so well together!

Francis- a thing of beauty, for sure. I wish I had the talents and skills you have to be able to manufacture such a lovely pen. Congratulations, Francis.

Francis,

Since you're experimenting with different materials, have you checked out Kydex? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kydex

Thanks for the tip!

But unfortunately I can't find any references to the color, nor the shape - flat, round bar stock- in which this material is available

Very sceptical when reading the title! Auch modern, technical material on a classic pen like that.

But l‘m liking it very much when seeing the pictures!

You really make the best out of two worlds. Especially with the challenges given by the material.

Thanks for showing and keep up the great work.

Cheers

Michael

Beautiful, Francis. I like the use of the classic telescopic piston mechanism.

Is solid silver a satisfactory material for a clip? I believed silver would be too soft to spring back to its original shape.

Thanks Fred !

As for the clip, Ive made the clip from cold rolled silver sheet .

Benefit being the external material layers become more dense and harder, making the clip rather springy !

Goodness! I was totally unaware of cold rolled silver sheet and its attributes. Thank you for sharing.
