Pilot Super Photo Thread

Hi, Folks!

Had the opportunity to pick up a few new Japanese pens, including a few 1950s vintage Pilot pens. Very attractive and interesting. This one came complete in the box, virtually new old stock.

This is a Pilot Super 300 fountain pen in black c. 1956. This 5 3/16 inch long pen draws from the design of the Parker 51 with a 14 karat rolled gold slip on cap, plastic barrel with a tapered section. The cap has a repeating six line engraving where the two middle lines have a repeating drip pattern. The clip is stamped PILOT. The cap top button is gold plated and the barrel end has a trim ring with black button. The barrel has an imprint PILOT over SUPER 300 just below the cap line. The fingernail shape 14 karat gold nib is semi inlaid and stamped PILOT over MADE IN over JAPAN over 14K. The nib has a vent at the bottom and there is a breather hole in the underside of the section near the nib tip. Note this example still has the model cellophane band intact, printed PILOT over RMW300 on the front and F for fine nib grade on the back. The pen has a knob filler unit, a rubber sac inside a metal sac protector with a pressure bar that is operated by flipping the lever on the end of the unit, similar to a button filler. Filling the pen requires unscrewing the barrel, inserting the nib in ink and flipping the knob to compress the ink sac.

Thanks for posting that picture! I think the Pilot name on the cellophane is especially neat...if you hadn't said when it was from I would have guessed "mid 60s" from the "L" in Pilot.

Any idea what the "RMW" stands for?

I wish I knew what the RMW means. The dating comes from the Lambrou book Fountain Pens of Japan. Thanks!

Hi, Folks!

Another recent new vintage Pilot Japanese pen. Very attractive and interesting. This one also came complete in the box, virtually new old stock.

This is a Pilot 57 fountain pen in black c. 1957. This 5 3/16 inch long pen draws from the design of the Parker 51 with a 14 karat gold plated slip on cap, plastic barrel with a tapered section. The clip is spring loaded. The cap top button is gold plated and the barrel end has a trim ring with black button. The barrel has an imprint PILOT 57 over MADE IN JAPAN just below the cap line. The fingernail shape gold plated nib is semi inlaid and stamped PILOT over SUPER over QUALITY. The nib has a vent at the bottom. Note this example still has the model cellophane band intact, printed PILOT over AM57G3 on one side and M for medium nib grade on the other. The pen has a squeeze filler unit, a rubber sac inside a metal sac protector that is operated by unscrewing the barrel, inserting the nib in ink and squeezing the metal pressure bars to compress the ink sac.

Great photo of a cool pen! I have one too, was also basically NIB. I wasn't able to find any date markings on it, how were you able to date it to 1957? I'd like to check mine for date as well. Thanks

I used Fountain Pens of Japan as a reference. I don't read Japanese and don't have primary reference material.

I love all these Pilot models with the funky extra crescent-shaped breather hole on the nib. Definitely going to have to buy one when the price is right! There was a mint green one on evilBay a few months back that ended up skyrocketing way beyond what I could pay. Anyone know how long they did this style of nib?

Very nice looking pen, love learning about models I'd never seen in these posts!

Hi, Folks!

Picked up a few more 1950s Japanese pens, including some more vintage Pilot pens. This one has been through it and needs some service. So far I've only found these pens in black. Would be interested to see other colors, if made.

This is a Pilot Super 150 fountain pen in black c. 1956. This 5 1/16 inch long pen is a downscale version of the Super 300 and 200 having a plastic cap with a wide 14 karat rolled gold band and plastic barrel with a tapered section. The clip is stamped PILOT. The cap top button is gold plated and the barrel end has a trim ring with black button. The barrel has an imprint PILOT over SUPER 150 just below the cap line. The fingernail shape 14 karat gold nib is semi inlaid and stamped PILOT over MADE IN over JAPAN over 14K. The nib has a vent at the bottom and there is a breather hole in the underside of the section near the nib tip. The pen has a knob filler unit, a rubber sac inside a metal sac protector with a pressure bar that is operated by flipping the lever on the end of the unit, similar to a button filler. Hi, Folks!

NOTE: I re-examined the pen. The stamping is 150L not 50L. Merging the two 150 threads.

Another 1950s Pilot pen. This one also needs some service. Would be interested to see other colors, if made.

This is a Pilot Super 150L fountain pen in black c. 1954. This 5 1/4 inch long pen is has a plastic cap with a wide 14 karat rolled gold band and plastic barrel with a tapered section that is angled on the top down to the inlaid nib. The clip is spring loaded. The cap top and barrel end buttons are gold plated. The barrel has an imprint PILOT over SUPER 150L over CP 20 just below the cap line. The angled fingernail shape gold plated stainless steel nib is semi inlaid and unmarked. There is a breather hole in the underside of the section near the nib tip.

Nice pen..It was made in Brazil by Brazilian Pilot Co.

How does one tell if this pen was made in Brazil or Japan? I don't see any markings indicating Brazil.
