Crack Open This Bottle

Recommended Posts

I found this amongst the contents of a carton of pens that I picked up and until I managed to marry it up with its box it had me scratching my head. What I love about this is that it is so understated; simply black (except for a cork coloured top) with not even a maker's name added. The paper insert also gives nothing away regarding maker, but at least it told me how to use it, and the mechanism works :)

Very curious! Looks to be in mint condition. Is it made of bakelite, or ebonite? How thick is it? I'm guessing from the relative size of the coin, this is a very short pencil. Do you know the diameter of the lead it takes?

Is it comfortable to write with?

Surprisingly it is; it's quite chunky but sits nicely in my hand.

Isn't it just curious!, probably as near to mint as you'd expect, and so far Google hasn't thown up another one like this.

I've a feeling that it's Bakelite (but I wouldn't bet on it), and it's just a tad under 4" long with the bottle neck tucked into the base. The leads seem to be around 0.9mm.

Brilliant! Thanks for that photo of it in your hand, as the scale is easier to appreciate than with just the coin. What a great find and a terrific conversation piece. 0.9mm was pretty standard back in the early mechanical pencil days, especially with the twist feed design. I'd preserve those original leads and see about getting some replacement 0.9mm to use in it.

About the only thing I could find on-line that comes close is this, a pencil in a metal champagne bottle shape:

Well found. It could very easily have been a blank for a promotional piece, but without any hint on the pencil, the leaflet or the box there's no way of telling.
