Looks like a factory stub.

If it had been re-tipped you would see that the gold would be slightly different color and the platinum mask would be disturbed. I have a late vac dest pen that has a similar nib. Mine is a smallish stub much more narrow than the later S4/S5 and Imperial stubs I own (which measure 1.4). I can't prove it but my guess is that if you got a higher end model or a signature band you might also request a factory stub and Sheaffer sometimes did these slightly smaller stubs too. My desk pen is probably about .8 and a softer stub than the S4/S5 stubs, my PFM stub, and the Imperials I own all of which are larger, sharper and especially in the case of the PFM, pretty much a formal italic.

Yours above and my desk pen might have been ground softer or just worn down from years of use but that looks more like a stub than a really full blown suit and tie Italic. Hard to tell from pictures.

Whatever it is, it is a beauty and congrats on a great great find.

They do exist. Not only do they exist, but they also tend to command quite the premium price since these nibs really can't be retipped for a host of reasons that I won't go into here. I've had 3 or 4 NOS factory stub nibs and flex nibs for these pens.

Hmm interesting. I might try and fit this into a balance vac fill as the bodies are beautiful and hold a good amount of ink.

How odd. I have one that has been retipped. So hard but not impossible?

It depends on how it is mounted. Some unscrew and can come off, others are pressed on and the back end rolled over, and don't come off, or go back on easily. Far more bother than it is worth.

Maybe the same nib? Mine came on a 1945-46 Crest Masterpiece.
