Parker "vs" Blue C1947

Hi, Folks!

I thought I'd start a thread on the Parker VS and see if we could get some photos of the various versions. Tony Fischier's Parkerpens.net indicates that there are three versions and two filling systems. I only have the one, but would be interested in seeing more.

The Parker VS is an interesting pen, introduced in 1946. It's a kind of mash-up of previous Parker designs. With the cap on, the pen has the outward appearance of a Vacumatic Lustraloy cap Parker 51 except for the tapered clip, similar to those found on certain Challenger and 1940s Duofold models. With the cap removed, a rather plain open nib is revealed, mated to a clear feed, similar to those found on cheap Wearever pens. Removing the end cap reveals an aluminum filler button, not the expected Vacumatic plunger. The original 1946 colors, according to Tony Fischier's Parkerpens.net, were black, grey and rust, with blue following, probably the next year.
Thanks!

Jim, thanks for all the incredible photos and fantastic reference material on your web site.

In a survey of five pens:

2 samples are 47 qtr 1 with aluminum filler and clear feed.

1 sample is 47 qtr 2 with aluminum filler and clear feed.

1 sample is 47 qtr 2 with plastic filler and non-clear feed.

1 sample no longer has readable markings and has plastic filler and non-clear feed.

Would love to see a photo!

Pictures persisitantly refusing to upload. It has been so for a few months with me. Can't figure out what is the problem. I select the picture and press but it always says 'no picture/file was chosen'.

The first ads I know are dated in 1947 (Alfred Lunt ads with and without VS pen). The VS was marketed with rigid or flexible nib. The version with lustraloy cap cost $8.75 and the model with gold filled cap, as this one, was $10.0.

Here's mine, including the Kullock I found. I have another 3-4 in the works, a couple of gray and black ones. I haven't seen the Danish-made aerometric versions, but have them on my radar. The VS has become my latest favorite Parker.

Just scored (last night) a grey NOS VS with the chalkmarks. The cluch ring on this one is gold washed. The pen has gold filled cap.

  • 6 months later...

I just received a blue VS, 2nd quarter 1947, with a gold filled cap. The nib also is marked .7. The photo I was planning to post did not show the blue color, so I'll have to take a better picture.

Both the blue pen and a black one with a Lustraloy cap were purchased from gweimer, above. Wonderful pens!

For love of it. And yet not waste time either.

I need to catch up...I have one of the Danish button-fill pens now. The clip is also different.

Then...I found that one of my others (that I was planning to sell) has a nib that somehow got inverted during the manufacturing process. The stamp is on the underside of the nib.

I finally got a half-decent photo of the two pens. Both nibs are 2nd quarter 1947; the black pen is 3rd quarter 1947; and the blue pen is 2nd quarter 1947.

Here's a couple more. The gray/gold set I just got.

Here's a Danish version I got recently. The clip is different, and this is a burgundy pen. The cap jewel matches the barrel. The cool thing about the clip is that the imprint is off-center.
