Lamy Obb

So my recently ordered Lamy 2000 with OBB nib has arrived. Must stand for Oh, BIG, BIG nib.

Mind you, I am usually using Fs and EFs, with an italic now and then, but this is huuuge, and the line variation is much less than I expected for an oblique nib. The pen itself is fantastic, but I think this one might have a trip to a nibmeister in it's cards in near future...

You know the drill: "Pictures or it didn't happen."

(Which is another way of saying: I've never seen a Lamy 2000 OBB nib or writing sample). ;)

 Aye, aye, sir! Working on it!

(E.g. first trying to put something that would at least seem legible on the paper, then to mage it go from the paper on the screen... I don't suppose my large format camera would do... :) )

I think you are right, noivho, there is a distinctive angle on this nib - it is in fact very comfortable to write with - but maybe more for someone with larger handwriting...

Still trying to figure out the uploading business...

I say daily or at least bi-weekly....modern oblique nibs are worthless unless you are left eye dominate and cant your nib....or are left handed..........................in modern nail, semi-nail and even the Pelikan 200's 'true' regular flex nibs......do not have any line variation one can notice.

You have to go to German '50s-65 semi-flex....flat stubbish....oblique. :notworthy1:  :puddle:

I'd send it back, get a BB normal and send it to a nib master to have it made Stub or CI....in Lamy's 2000 is a stiffer nib.

Stub or CI is all you can do to stiff nibs.

I had a Lamy 18 K nail Persona OB.................. :( :headsmack: :crybaby: No line variation. In CI it's good.

But with a new nib and the chance to change it from OBB to BB you can make a better stub out of it. The reason I recommend getting a newer flat nib...is ground oblique there might be too much of an angle to get a good flat stub.

Of course some one may know that a modern stiff nib that is oblique can be made to have a different pattern of stub that flat stub can't do.

I just know my Lamy Persona OB was a major disappointment. Even a W. Germany 200 OM 'true' regular flex was too stiff to show line variation.

Thanks for the pic! Some time ago I bought a Lamy 2000 with a B nib and was very disappointed as it seemed that I was writing with a Sharpie!

Thanks for your replies..

Bo, you are right perhaps, vintage is the thing to go, most likely.. But for a every day, carry with me use I'd rather stick to a modern pen, with a stiff nib to allow for quick scribbling of notes - but since I realize that a little line variation makes my handwriting more legible (it might only be that I enjoy it more and therefore write nicer and slower), I'll see what can be done..

On the other hand it would seem to me that for a quick scribble or prolonged writing a slight oblique might be a tad more comfortable - and on this particular example there seems to be a lot of tip to work on, even if the obliqueness had to be straightened a little...

I have no problem quick scribbling with semi-flex vintage pens....just as fast...in all I'm doing is writing, not trying to make a statement with a fancy script.

I could see not using a Superflex for at work or underway. But semi-flex can withstand ham fisted writers..... .

A $80- $120 used pen vs $200 or $120...2000 on Amazon....is not much of a difference..............You are not buying Buy Now on American Ebay from German Pirates who know Americans will pay way too much....are you?

German Ebay is where to hunt....just make sure they take Paypal and mail out of Germany. If so go Geha 790....at if very lucky E19...of not 30-50.......sigh....if you ain't got time to hunt....E70.

It has three rings on the cap jewel...there is a cheaper lower model with 2 rings and the school pen has no ring but the clip's ring. The school pen is normally 'true' regular flex like a Pelikan 120.

Torpedo shape was very in back then in the '50-60's....MB 146/9, 400nn, Geha 790/760, and some English Swan pens. Geha School pens also....a good buy on German Ebay for E12-19....a good 'true' regular flex nib with the American Bump Under like a Pelikan 120....

Do Not  Buy Now from German Pirates :ninja: on US Ebay, who offer the Geha School pen for only $89. :lticaptd:

I and a couple of fine posters who brought it to my attention, find the Geha nibs a slight tad better than Pelikan....their main competition. Both were based in Hanover.

The first thing the Malaysian billionaire who saved Pelikan did, was buy Geha's pen division and shut it down. Geha was too much completion in school and cheaper cartridge pens.....then a couple years later Lamy brought out the Safari. :lticaptd:

Bo, thank you for this advice.. I shop at german ebay regularly and I even have the possibility to have my purchases delivered to a german address... I will keep a lookout for these Geha pens..

Are there any other noteworthy candidates for my pen pouch lurking there? Any advice, especially a stubby one, would be most welcomed - either here or via PM..

Vielen Dank!

  • 1 month later...

I had planned to spend almost £200 on a Lamy 2000 OBB (£150) and have it ground to cursive italic (£40) but, instead, I have bought a special offer 2K with M nib for £100. I have an old Lamy 27 with an OBB nib which is wet, wide, and has good line variation so does not need a nibwright. Result = HAPPINESS ++++

This is magnificent - would love to lay my hands on one of these if I could find one!
