Recommend A Bright Blue Ink

Vlad Soare

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking for a very bright blue, like the one used on the FPN sidebar:

I did some searching, and the only ink I could find that seems to fit the bill is Noodler's Baystate Blue:

First, does this ink really look like that? Is it really what I'm after? I'm asking because it did happen to me in the past to order an ink that looked good online, only to find out later that its real color was different.

Second, can you recommend any other ink that looks like this? I would avoid Noodler's if given a choice.

Thank you.

BSB looks brighter than that. However it tends to stain a lot and feathers horribly. My bottle sits unused because of this reason.

Other bright blues that I have used are:

J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir

Iroshizuku Asa Gao

Diamine Sapphire

I know there are others but these work just fine.

The Diamine Sapphire seems to be close enough. I had originally dismissed it because on Goulet's page it seemed to have an unattractive hint of purple. But other samples, particularly this one, look fine.

I think I'll give it a try.

Thank you.

Afaik, there's nothing on the market that comes close to BSB in terms of vividness/brightness. That is a very special ink. However, it's got its drawbacks - staining, changes color over the years. I still use it though.

The other mentioned inks (eclat de sapphire etc) while close in color are nowhere close in brightness.

Nothing like bsb in terms of brigthness and visibility.

I use it in a platinum plaisir, with the click & seal cap, and it has no problems.

Other bright blues: Diamine Cornflower, DeAtramentis Hyacinth.

I use BSB, but it's not my favorite blue (it leans a tad purple). And I limit its use to a single pen originally a cheap Chinese demonstrator, and now a Noodler's Charlie eyedropper -- that way I can control the dilution with distilled water to combat the feathering issues without decreasing the vibrancy.

Another ink to have a look at (not as vibrant -- and not at all waterproof -- but is well behaved otherwise) is J Herbin Eclat de Saphir. That is an ink that's really grown on me over the past year, and one I would not hesitate to put into a vintage pen that's hard to clean: one of my Parker 61s, with the capillary filler. I ran it for several months last year with that ink in it, and then at least another month with diluting with distilled water when I wanted to swap that pen with something else.

Diamine Sapphire blue is the same color, but it doesn't wreck everything. Try it. I love it.

I've used Asa Gao in everything I own from new Pelikans to 96 year old Pelikans. It is beautiful and well behaved in all of them.

BSB melted the feed in my Pelikan Celebry. Of course it was only after letting the ink sit in the pen without using it for quite a while.

I'M looking for exactly the same kind of blue as Vlad, so bought a bottle of J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir on the Bay yesterday - can't wait to try it! Would also love to try PR DC Supershow, but it's a bit expensive once you add shipping to Germany :-(

Have you tried The Writing Desk? I have ordered pens and inks from them (and vials & syringes) and always been happy, delivery cost is very reasonable and they are always friendly too. Had deliveries to Germany and UK from them and never had any issue.

Other choice could be La Couronne du Comte, but I would first ask if they really have it in stock.

Here's an update on my search for a bright blue - very happy with the the J. Herbin Eclat des Saphir, now my favourite. Also bought Diamine Sapphire Blue, but this is noticeably darker and less my cup of tea.

PR DC Supershow will have to wait quite a while now.....

Diamine Sapphire Blue leans rather purple for me. Nothing like the colour you want from the screencap. I would suggest Noodler's Blue/Eel, Liberty's Elysium, or PRAB/Fast Dry.

The Éclat de Saphir looks nice. It seems to be close enough to what I'm looking for.

Thank you.

If you look down in my signature link, you will see a link to blue writing samples. BSB is amazingly bright. It's not for every pen, but it's amazing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
