Pilot Medium Nib Vs Lamy Fine Nib

Recommended Posts

Hoping you are having a great day today. :D

I have a question for the experts here. (Basically everybody here but me) :lticaptd:

Proud owner of a Lamy Studio 14k and a Lamy Safari, both fine nibs. I've noticed that the Lamy gold nib is a tad thicker than its steel counter part. I was quite surprised. It is not a huge difference, but I can notice it right away.

I am wondering if you could tell me how a Pilot #5 medium nib would compare to the line thickness of those 2 Lamy nibs. I got some Pilot pens coming my way and would like to find out more about them. Can hardly wait!

Thank you!

I have dreamt of the day where I am holding a Waterman Carene. Sigh... seems too distant I can only see the fog far away.

I would have guessed that the Pilot M would be more like a Lamy EF. At least, my Metropolitan and Prera F nibs are very much finer than my Lamy (Safari & AlStar) EF nibs.

Pilot M will be about the same thickness as the Lamy F. Perhaps a tad thicker, but probably just about equal.

Oh...

I was hoping for the Pilot M to be thinner than the Lamy F, or at least the same.

Definitely confused now. Haha.

My two Metropolitans, both M, is slightly thinner than my AL-star F. I would about half a size.

My Prera M feels similar to my Lamy's F steel in width. The Prera is smoother but has a worse writing angle to my liking. I find Lamy's F steel great all around everyday nibs, I don't bother going finer than that these days.

My Lamy M gold is not thicker than the steel counterparts. Maybe my nib is erratic because the cut is not perfectly centered.

It just occurred to me to look at the Nib Nook on the Goulet Pens site. http://www.gouletpens.com/nib-nook (no affiliation, I just shop with them :) )

Looks to me as though the Metropolitan M is very close to the Lamy EF - just a wee bit narrower to my eye, but it's hard to see, and probably varies a little with individual nibs and writing styles. It looks decidedly finer than the Lamy F, though.

Sorry about the shadow.

The difference in line width seems more distinguishable in reality. But the picture gives you a good idea.
