Kaigelu 316 Nib Replacement Solution --Schmidt Nib

Recommended Posts

I accidentally got a #6ish schmidt nib from a board member. It was an odd size, shorter than a regular #6 but slightly longer than the original Kaigelu 316 nib. It fits the Kaigelu very well and writes perfectly. I just have no idea what the model of this schmidt nib is. If anyone happen to know, please let us know. I would like to buy more of this nib. (It is difficult to get it out from the Kaigelu, so i cannot take a photo of that. The end of the nib has two half rounded shape like the original kaigelu)

Please let us know when you figure out the model and a source.

I used a Knox I got from xfountainpens.com I like broad nibs so I bought a 3-pack but they sell singles. Fit like a charm. Be sure to check out their Chesterfield inks: rebottled diamine.

I used a Bock #250 nib housing, along with a Bock EF stainless steel 2-tone #6 nib and the BeaufortInk cartridge converter as a Kaigelu 316 Nib Replacement solution. It works like a charm. The thread can be found in FPN https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/302951-kaigelu-316-modification-250-6-bock-nib-beaufort-ink-converter/

Other #6 nibs can also be substituted in the Bock housing, so that other high quality #6 nibs like Edison, Goulet, Anderson, Monteverde or Franklin-Christoph could potentially be fitted successfully into this pen.

Your solution is great. The odd size Schmidt nib would be easier solution but I still can't figure out what model it is. Neither 5 nor 6. But I have sold the pen and bought two more black 316.

Thank you for your nice comment about my small contribution to solving the ''Kaigelu 316 replacement nib puzzzle''. :)

In your pictures, your Kaigelu 316 pen looks just fabulous! it is a nice looking pen, in all three color versions, I only have the pen in the amber and the ivory colors. However I have seen the darker colored one with the grey-greenish swirls and it looks fantastic too. In my humble opinion, the black version is the most discrete option among the three colors available, especially if one wants to use the pen as an everyday pen.

I am most content with my EF Bock nib in my Kagelu pen, it writes like a dream, and it was not such a difficult pen modification to carry out. However, but out of curiosity, would you have any idea where you can get the Inox Schmidt nib from? I was also wondering whether you have tried the Knox nib as a replacement option for this pen and how did this work out. Any chance that a Fountain Pen Revolution (FPR) nib might also fit?

Regards,

Photios

Photios, this is very interesting news! Does the Bock 250 nib housing match the threads machined inside the Kaigelu's section? i've always found it strange (and slightly lame, for an otherwise excellent pen) that the nib housing installed in the 316 (seen two slightly different types) is blank, whereas the section is internally threaded.

Flounder,

I couldn't agree with you more, it is unfortunate that the original Kaigelu 316 nib housing does not engage the threads inside its section. One explanation for this might be, in my humble opinion, that perhaps the internal threads that we see inside the pen section are not meant for fixing of a nib housing; rather they correspond to the threads that are used to engage the Kaigelu cartridge converter, which is a screw type, and screws on the top of the pen section.

If we were to compare the Bock 250 vs the Kaigelu nib housing, here are some of their characteristics (please kindly refer to Figs 2 and 3 of the original post found here https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/302951-kaigelu-316-modification-250-6-bock-nib-beaufort-ink-converter/):

http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah12/phzervas/Fig%202_zps6kwdbc8i.jpg

http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah12/phzervas/Fig%203_zps3vdvjvce.jpg

1. The Kaigelu nib housing is competely cylindrical with a diameter of 8mm, with smooth surface and without any threads, and fits inside the pen section with friction fit, without engaging any of the section internal threads.

2. The Bock 250 nib housing, is cyliindrical with a diameter of 8 mm at its nib two thirds, where it is smooth, but tapers off and becomes narrower by a few tenths of a millimeter near its nipple end, where it presents an array of 3-4 external threads. That is exactly the reason that the Bock 250 nib housing does not engage the threads inside the Kaigelu section, it is narrower by a few tenths of a millimeter.

However, in my mind, although it would be desirable, there is no extra need for the Bock housing to screw inside the Kaigelu housing. It fits snugly with fiction fit alone, even without the need of any kind of adhesive. The same applies for the Beaufort Ink Converter that fits inside the top of the pen section with friction fit and connects with the Bock 250 nib housing nipple perfectly. I have been carrying my modified Kaigelu 316 pen inside my trouser pocket for weeks now, without any incident of ink leakage whatsoever.

I did not mean to get into these technical details, I hope this was useful for anyone willing to try this nib replacement/improvement of the Kaigelu 316 pen, which is not that costly either. It cost me around 15euros for the Bock nib and around 4 euros for the Beaufort Ink Converter. And now it is a perfect pen for me.

Thanks Photios

PS: As a personal note, Flounder, I could not help visiting your blog for the first time a few minutes ago. Aside from tons of pen repair info found there, I was quite moved by your post as of 27 January 2015, titled "It's five a clock". Best Regards, Photios.
