Question About The Twsbi Nib Sizes

gant

Recommended Posts

I am new to fountain pens and have some questions.

I am about to buy a 580 rose gold.

How is the TWSBI nib sizes compare to Pilot and Pelikan?

I have a Pelikan M805 with EF nib, and a Pilot Heritage 912 PO nib. My experience is that the PO nib makes thinner lines than the Pelikan EF nib. The Pelikan EF nib feels smoother than the PO nib.

Should I go with a TWSBI (F) nib or (EF) nib is I want the same feeling as the Pelikan EF nib?

Thank you in advance.

TWSBI nibs apparently line up closer to European nibs than Japanese nibs. My TWSBI EF nib (in a Vac 700) is similar in line width to my Pilot Elite 95s F nib.

Hope this helps!

I have 3 TWSBI pens with EF nibs, and without exception I find them to draw a nice fine line, and to glide pleasantly across the paper. Not 'whisper-smooth', there's just a hint of feedback - but not at all 'scratchy' either.

I don't have any pens with Pelikan nibs - but I understand they're fairly wet, and lay down a thicker line than most other European pens. I'd agree with the post above, that the TWSBI EF nibs are similar to a Pilot F nib (I have a Vanishing Point and a Metropolitan). I wish I could comment on the TWSBI Fine nibs, but I've never tried one - I have a M, a B and a 1.5mm stub, but (until it arrives in the mail next week!) I don't have a Fine...

Don't know if that helps to make the decision any easier - but wish you all the best with it!

My Pelikan M200 EF is smoother than both of my TWSBI EF nibs, one 580 and one Mini. The most noticeable tooth comes with the TWSBI nibs with strokes up and to the right. I haven't bothered smoothing them yet because they do give me a finer line than the Pelikan, but not by a large extent. I always suggest that people who really get into fountain pen use learn how to do minor pen tuning and nib smoothing. That way some of the major annoyances that slip through quality control can be handled with little effort.

I own several TWSBI pens and a couple of Pelikans (and have used many more of each). The TWSBI nibs are German, and, as others have mentioned, are similar in many ways to those on the Pelikans. I find that, in general, a TWSBI nib of a particular size is a bit drier and finer than the corresponding Pelikan nib size. This is not to say that the TWSBI nibs are bad - I just find the Pelikans to be exceptionally smooth and wet.

Pilot nibs (I have several) are, on the other hand, a very different story. The fine nibs on my Prera and Custom 823 are finer than the extra fine nibs I have on anything using a European nib. They are smooth writers (I had one issue with one ink with the Prera, but it has been awesome with every other ink used) and lay down good lines. Having used Pelikans for a long time, I would never call a Pilot nib a wet writer, but I have not had issues with dryness. I have not tried a posting nib or an extra fine for a Pilot (I wish that either of these nibs were available for the 823), but I expect that they would be even narrower.

I hope this helps!

i bought a 580 ef recently and like it for writing in my 6mm line moleskine diary

i have the feeling that the difference between any two f and ef twsbi nibs would vary from pair to pair

my twsbi ef is about equal to my pilot 823 fine nib

the goulet nib tool is somewhat useful but at those sizes it really is hard to tease out meaningful differences

the twsbi nib itself is great, lays down a nice line everytime

flip a coin and err on the side of what would bother you more, a too-wide line or a too-narrow line ...

I would go with the F nib and make minor adjustments to get what you want. Pelikans tend to be more wet. What ink are you planning to use with it?

Thank you for the reply.

The inks I plan to use are Lamy T52 Black and J Herbin Perle Noire.

Thank you in advance.

I think the TWSBI F will be like the Pelikan EF. TWSBIs are wider, as a rule, than most Far Eastern pens BUT Pelikan is broader than most pens in general. I suspect that the F will, excuse me, fill your bill. Also, as for smoothness, I think Pels are as smooth as you can get. They are almost boring. TWSBI gives you more "road feel" but are still smooth. Hope that helps.

Thank you.

I ordered a 580 rose gold with EF nib. But the pen shop told me that they do not have the EF nib in stock. I cancelled the order. I will try to order again soon when I find a good price for the pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Nice post that should be very useful.

Since I last wrote, I've picked up a few more Pilots, including a Vanishing Point with an EF nib. I find it to be much thinner than the TWSBI EF but also, as you might expect, a bit scratchy on some papers. It is certainly not as smooth as my TWSBI EF nib. On the other hand, I now have a wet writing Pilot nib - the F nib in my Decimo is every bit as wet and smooth as my Pelikan F nibs. In fact, I've double-checked the nib unit a couple of times because it lays down a wider line than any of my other Pilot F nibs. This doesn't mean that it is a bad nib, just that it is very different than anything else I have used from Pilot.

Hi... hope this helps... I just got my 580 EF and I love it.

I also have a Lamy Scala EF nib which I like it very much.

Both EF nibs are great and pretty much the same thickness.

Bruce

ps. Ink is Noodler's Baystate ink... I love this blue color so much!!!
