Omas (Factory) Stub V. Italic Nib?

Can anyone explain the difference between the factory stub and factory medium italic nibs from Omas? Or point me to a writing sample?

Based on other posts (such as https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/281098-omas-ogiva-alba-with-a-factory-italic-nib/), seems like the factory medium italic is cut from a B nib and untipped. Is the stub the same thing (i.e., cut from B nib and untipped)?

Current Wishlist:

Visconti, Visconti, and...more Visconti! (And some ST Duponts too). (Ok fine, getting on the Omas and Montblanc trains now too. Toot toot.) (And maybe on the Montegrappa one too, but only for the Miyas.)

I have the factory stub on a Extra Lucens and it's definitely tipped. I'm not much of a nib expert but I don't think its ground down from a B nib either.

It's the degree of thickness. My italic is not tipped. My stub is and looks much like any other 1.3 stub in my collection.

My green OMAS Ogiva Alba, reviewed in the topic cited by the OP, has an untipped factory italic nib. It was ground from a B nib. On impulse, faced with the near total disappearance of the LE Ogiva Albas with italic nibs, I bought an orange one from Goulet. It's on its way to me. If it's the same as GP's, it will also be untipped but ground from a M nib, if memory serves. I look forward to comparing these two pens.

I have yet to see a tipped OMAS factory stub but would sure like to. I would like to see a tipped OMAS factory italic nib even more. Do they exist?

David, I am looking forward to your comparison between the B-italic and the M-italic!!

Thank you for the writing sample! Do you know if your stub and italic were both ground from B nibs?

I tried to order an OMAS Ogiva Alba with a factory oblique nib from Goulet, but after several weeks, they said they could not obtain one from the factory and refunded my money. I hope to get a Bronze Arco Paragon with a stub or cursive italic nib from John Mottishaw someday.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

My Ogivas in Arco Brown and Saft Green have factory Stub nibs that are tipped. They look like they were ground from something, but were purchased new and are marked ST as they came.

I believe GP's OMAS stub is also tipped. I have just never seen one myself. And I have never seen an OMAS italic nib that was not ground from a round nib. Do they really exist? Marco from Novelli did some youtube videos of OMAS stub and italic writing. I couldn't tell if the Italic nib was tipped. It's worth an email query.

So my purple italic from Marco at Novelli arrived today. Interesting, it is marked "B". My teal italic is an "M" though. So maybe the italics from Europe are ground from Bs but the US ones are ground from Ms?

  • 6 years later...

Holy thread resurrection.

Just received an old Omas italic nib to place in a LE Omas Vision. It's marked M but I would guess the tip is the same size as an italic that started as a B. Think when they cut off the tip it was at a place where M and B would be equal.
