How To Carry A Pen

Ambrose Bierce

Recommended Posts

So I know most of us carry our pens in a breast pocket of our shirt, but in some instances that is not an option. Take, for example, tonight, I am wearing a sweater over my dress shirt and cannot access my breast pocket. I know I can always just put it in my pocket and be certain not to throw my keys in with it, but I am sure there is a better option than just this. Any ideas?

When I wear a sweater over a collared/pocketed shirt the only change is the sweater. I still put a pen in the pocket.

Tonight I will be wearing a long sleeve twill shirt with not one but two pockets. It even has a "pen pocket" sewn into the pocket over my left breast. Right now I have my TWSBI 580 B nib with my own BlackStone Blue Black concoction.

Merry Christmas!

If your sweater just has a regular neck, you can put the clip of your pen over it - either leaving the pen on the inside or outside.

Usually I would still use the pocket of my shirt even when wearing a sweater.

Some seem adamantly against it, but that's what pocket pens are for. It's what I do anyway...

Kaweco Liliputs, dual slipcase (two pens in the space of a lighter? woot!) Kaweco Sport, Franklin Christoph Model 40 Pocket (with 18k Masuyama Cursive Italic), and a standard Bic lighter for size comparison.

My current favorite is this 50's vintage Kaweco Sport 11.

When I can't carry a full size FP in my shirt, I carry a pocket pen (Ohto Tasche) in my left front pant pocket.

As with Ute, I've put a full size FP in my shirt pocket, under the sweater.

I can always reach under the sweater to get the pen.

I, too, carry my pens in lovely leather pen pouches in my handbag. The pouches themselves can be beautifully-made works of art (that's a beauty, VivienR :) )

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

I carry pens however and have never had a problem with ink spilling (I tend to get pens with well-secured caps though), although I have had some minor scratches appear.

Nice to see another fan of the Kaweco pocket 2-pen slip case! For those days (well, most days!) when I want a pocket carry, I use the same case but with the following passengers:

  • chrome Fisher bullet Space pen
  • Pilot M90 M nib
  • very vintage Moore Pen Co (1920's?) 1.1 mp

They all ride together in this case very nicely!

i am almost always carrying my messenger bag, and have found that the Timbuk2 phone pockets are perfect. They're soft on the inside for protection, the medium size is good for big pens, and when I've got my bag on, the pens are always ready to use. Best of all, I can take it off my bag and strap it on elsewhere. I have no stake with the company, just think it's a nice product.

  • 2 years later...

I carry a pen case in my coat pocket. If you're limited to pants pocket carry, I'd pick up a pen sleeve or a cigar case. That way you don't have to worry about other pocket contents banging around.

When I first saw the name of this thread my thoughts were not as practical as the ones proffered here

My thought was to answer,

With as much panache as you can muster :D
